C-section Moms

Any advice for a first time Mom having a c-section tomorrow?

Re: C-section Moms

  • The sooner you move, the better. I had to stay in bed for 3 days because I was on an IV and Magnesium Sulphate drip for high BP so I could not get out of bed. Once I was able to get up and move around, I healed much faster. Also, take the meds they give you and dont wait until you are in pain to request them. :)

  • Have someone at home to help you, not just your DH -- he's exhausted, too.?

Use your legs, not your abs, to stand from a sitting position.

My recovery was better than I thought it would be. I attribute this to walking around as much as I could and eating as soon as I was able to. This meant I skipped the narcotics because they make me throw up.?

  • Get up and moving as soon as you can, but don't over do it!

Eat fiber and pass gas as early as you can

Stay on top of your pain meds!! As someone who was very anti-med during labor (my c-section wasn't planned), I can speak from experience that you neeeeed them afterwards. But don't wait until you are in pain to ask!

If you plan to BF, make sure you get lots of pillows from the nurses

Also about BFing, try ASAP in the recovery room even if the nurses don't push it

    The shakes are totally normal

The spinal isn't as bad as it sounds

    Good luck! You'll be fine!

  • Well I was ready for the epi and all that comes with a c-section but what was weird that actually hurt pretty bad was the antibiodics they shot into my IV. The nurse said it would feel cold but it hurt like hell. Also remind you DH to not block you view of baby when they are cleaning them up and weighting. Tell him to take tons of pics and nurses will take pics of the three of you if you ask. Good Luck!!! Hope to see you back on here soon with an LO.

  • Definitely get up, move around, take a shower, and eat as soon as you're able.  But balance that with rest - it's important to move around but it's also easy to overdo it.  I also agree with the pp's about trying to BF as soon as possible - we did it immediately when we were both back in our room and he latched right on and nursed from both breasts, it was amazing to me and was good for my morale because I was worried effect the c-section would have on nursing.

Also while it's important to be on top of your pain meds, I found it better to take what I felt I needed instead of everything that was offered to me every time.  2 percosets and an ibuprofen were more than I needed and the percs made me feel really loopy - so usually I would opt to take my ibuprofen and one percoset and then have another later if I felt I needed it.

  • Move around ASAP, and stay on top of the meds (like pp said, I was happier with one percocet instead of 2, just because it didn't make me feel so out of it.  Depends on how you do with the meds)  EAT-- you'll need your strength and it helps handle the meds better.

Things on the floor are very difficult to get to while you are healing.  Walk around your house and make sure there's nothing you need really badly that you have stored on the floor.  Lots of things you can't get to now because of the big belly will be difficult to get to while you are healing.  Don't store anything down low thinking you'll be able to get to it next week, it will take a few weeks before you can get to anything on the floor.

Yes 1 percoset and 1 extra-strength advil gelcap worked best for me... after 10 days I barely need the meds.

Take it easy with getting into/out of bed - you may feel like your body did 400 situps at once - tight, stiff, sore, weak.

Also, drink lots of water and don't be surprised by the water and gas retention... its very excessive. And, eat fresh fruit/fibre right away... dont wait 12 hours after the surgery to eat real food.
