2nd Trimester

When are you going on maternity leave?

Just wondering because DH and I are self employed and we weren't sure when I should stop working. We own a service-based business so I'm working on my feet for a few hours everyday. I'm sure when I get uncomfortable working I will stop but I just wanted to see when everyone else plans to leave work. Thanks!!

Re: When are you going on maternity leave?

  • I am going to try to work as long as I can. I would say when you feel you can't work anymore or when the toll on your body feels to great you should stop working.

eta: I think it is best to play it by ear and listen to your body/doctor. This is my plan.

  • Due 12/2 starting mat leave on Thanksgiving.

  • I am going to try to make it as far as I can.  I don't plan to go more than a week before my due date though.  If I feel okay still working - then I will just continue until I go into labor.

I don't want to take off 2 weeks before my due date and then I end up being overdue by 2 weeks (this is my first baby).  That is a month of maternity I will feel like I wasted... I want as much time at home with baby as possible.

  • I am planning to work until the very end if possible. I'd like to keep all of my 12 weeks of FMLA to be with LO. We will see how it goes though.

This! I'm going to try to work as long as possible. I don't want to "waste" time at home before the baby gets here b/c that's less time I can spend with the baby later on.

This.  I want as much of that 12 weeks to be with DS.

  • I plan on working until the end, I joke with my boss that he'll probably be the one to drive me to the hospital. And, that way I'll be able to send more time with the LO's afterward.
  • My plan is to work until the day i go into labor. It all depends on how i feel.
  • I can only use my sick leave before the baby is born, so I'm planning on taking off 3-4 weeks before I'm due (and then have 5.5 months paid after birth)
  • I'm due Dec 6th and I will work up until December.
  • I get no time before the baby is here & only 6 or 8 weeks after. So, I will be working up to the day I deliver!

  • Pretty much the same as what most ppl said..

My company gives us 4 weeks prior (paid w/ benefits) and 6 weeks after for vaginal / 8 weeks if C-section. The before and after are from two different "pots" of money so we lose what we don't use beforehand.

My last day is November 6th, which is a Friday.

And i just have this feeling that I will go early so 4 weeks before I'm due sounds good to me..

  • answer: when I go into labor! I have patients scheduled daily and do not want to twiddle my thumbs and "waste" my maternity leave resting. Would be nice but I am only taking 10 weeks...
  • With DS, I planned on working until the end.  I was due on a Wednesday, but the Friday before I decided it would be my last day.  I had DS on Monday, so I didn't end up "wasting" any maternity leave before he was born.

This time, I work out of my house.  I really do plan to work riht up until the last minute...because I can work on my laptop from bed wearing my jammies if I want to.  Stick out tongue  I am really hoping that I go into labor on a weekday during the morning.  We are 2.5 hours from family and have nobody to watch DS until my Mom gets here.  He goes to daycare during the day, do I'm hoping that he can be there while waiting for my Mom to get here.  LOL

  • I'm working until my due date!
  • Hopefully I will actually have a job by that time! But I just wanted to say there have been studies to show that women who stop working at least 2 weeks before they are due/have the baby tend to recover faster and have better outcomes than those who keep working.

LUCKY!! lol I am working til my water breaks. hehe. I have a pretty easy job as far as physical activity is concerned.

  • With my daughter, I worked up till 41w3d. That was a Friday, and I went in Sunday night to start my induction.

I was glad I worked right up till the end. I would've gone insane with nothing to do for those last few weeks but sit around wondering when she was going to come. Work was a wonderful distraction.

I'm planning the same this time around.

Mommy to DD1 (June 2007), DS (January 2010), DD2 (July 2012), and The Next One (EDD 3/31/2015)

  • I work on my feet all day and plan on working until the week before I'm due. Some women work until they go into labor, others take off a month before they're due, its a personal decision and one that you might discuss with your doctor if you feel you should work or feel like you can't.
  • I have a friend that had to go out on leave 2 months before her twins were born with her first pregnancy.  She went NUTS filling her time.

With her second pregnancy, she had a scheduled c-section on a wed.  The previous Friday was her last day of work, but started having contractions the previous Thurs. (day before she was supposed to stop working).  She delivered that Thursday night.  She said working until delivery day was so much better!

    Good luck with your decision.
