2nd Trimester

HAVEN'T gained weight

And before you say "OMG you're so lucky", I'm not. I eat and eat and get comments that I'm not feeding my baby and he's too small. It's really mean and hurts my feelings. My baby is fine!

Anyways, IDK what to do! I have an appointment in a week, so I will talk with my Dr then about it also, but has anyone else had this problem? Where's that site that tells you how much you should gain at certain points of your pregnancy.

I know "every one is different" yadda yadda, but I want to get a handle on my whole situation so I can talk to my Dr about it later and get the answers I need and not forget everything I was going to say. Is there something specific I should be eating that I'm forgetting? Is anyone else in this boat? Is it totally normal and I should just chill? LOL

Thanks :)

Re: HAVEN'T gained weight

  • If your doctor isn't concerenced you shouldn't be either. I have only gained 2 pounds and everything is fine. As long as everything looks fine you should worry about it.

  • It's not a bad thing you aren't gaining weight.. yes you are lucky.. but no it's not bad! I have been gaining one dr visit, but then looisng the next visit. My dr said it's fine, AS LONG AS THE BABY IS GAINING AND GROWING there isn't a darn thing wrong.... don't worry about it.
  • Well, as of my last doctors appt I was still 3 pounds under my pre-pregnancy weight. I lost about 6 pounds total in first tri due to being sick. I have apparently gained 3 pounds of that back. My weight seems to have shifted because I definately have a bump. My doctor does not seem concerned now that I am putting weight back on. Very slowly but it's progress.
  • i haven't gained weight either.. in fact, i can't seem to stop losing weight. the baby measured normally at my last appointment so the doctor said not to worry...

they say for some women it's totally normal. i have a friend who started her pregnancy out at 140 and when she gave birth she was 136 and her baby was perfectly healthy.

  • I have the exact same problem. At my last appointment about 2 weeks ago, I hadn't gained a pound. Part of me is really worried too.  I eat plenty, but I defintiely don't always eat the healthiest stuff. I take my prenatal vitamin and iron(recently went on this due to anemia) everyday. My baby is moving all the time and I just want to being doing what's best for him/her. I'm so curious to see other feedback to your post.
  • I didn't gain any weight until 22 weeks. If you're doctor isn't concerned, then you shouldn't be.

  • Well she's not paying attention honestly, because I asked her about it last time and she said "You've gained 10, that's good." But I hadn't. I LOST 15 and gained 10 back. She was looking at the wrong numbers. So IDK yet. I'll have to see next week and correct her if she's making the same mistake.

I tend to go brain blank when I go in there, so I'm really posting this to be prepared cause she doesn't pay any attention to anything LOL.

Thanks for all the posts. Y'all are making me feel a little better! I take my bitamins and iron as well, and at 18 weeks he was on track! I should relax, but I just hate the mean comments. If they were about me, that'd be one thing, but saying my baby is too little? AGH.

  • I lost 17 pounds initially and still am 14 pounds under my prepg weight.  it's ok as long as you are getting enough food and your doctor isn't worried, you shouldn't be worried.

  • Chill.

Talk to your doctor about your concerns but trust me, the baby will be getting what he needs.

I have gained some weight but still don't even look pregnant. ie still wearing  regular clothes.     The baby measured fine at the big u/s.  My fundal height at my last check-up was right on. (I was underweight when I became pregnant).

There is no one right chart for what evryone should gain by x point.  Some women gain less. Some gain more.

  • I'm down about two pounds from my pre-PG weight, and my doc isn't worried. I was a little overweight to begin with (around 165) so I have some cushion. My belly is definitely growing, and at the last ultrasound, the baby was measuring just fine. I eat what I want when I want. I don't eat super healthy, but I don't eat a bunch of crap either. Everyone is different. One of my best friends also hadn't gained any weight at this point, but her belly was a lot bigger than mine. I still haven't told my co-workers that I'm PG.

  • Like everyone has said...don't worry.  Your baby will get what he/she needs.  I only gained 11 lbs with DD.  She is very healthy at 10 months.  I think I may have gained 1 or 2 lbs with this one...I don't even check my weight other than at OB appts.
  • I haven't gained, but I'm SIGNIFICANTLY overweight for my height.  As for blanking out at the appt and not asking questions, I use the note section on my iphone to jot down things to remember and ask about.
  • Last I checked (sometime late last week) I was still down 7 lbs from my pre-preg weight.

I lost a total of 11, so I am starting to gain some back.  My doctor is not concerned.  Just talk to your doctor.  If they aren't worried, I wouldn't worry either.

  • Before I tell you to worry or not worry, I will say that I think a lot of this depends on your pre-pregnancy weight. If you were underweight to begin with and you are not gaining weight, then yes - I think that could be an issue.

If you were overweight to begin with, then weight gain is less of an issue. My doctor just mentioned to me that the weight gain guidelines for overweight/obese women were just moved way downward to 10 lbs. total throughout the entire pregnancy.

One other thing - I think that your body will do what it needs to do in pregnancy, period. If you are eating healthfully, around 2,000 calories a day give or take, and most of it is nutritious, then you are doing all the right things. I was underweight to begin with and I have gained 5-6 pounds basically since hitting 2nd tri. I don't feel like I am eating significantly more or different than usual, and I do not have a bump at all. I don't know where these extra pounds are even going, because I feel and seem to look the same and my clothes still fit.

My point is...whether I (or you) worry or not, our bodies will probably just keep doing what they are supposed to do. So please try not to worry. And don't listen to the negative comments, I don't think people mean you harm and I bet they are trying to give you a backhanded compliment, however misguided.

  • I had that problem with my DD..and it seems to be contining with this pregnancy. I started at 110lbs...i lost weight in the begining and then nothing until about 7 months...8 months is when i really plumped up. By really i mean only 10 lbs. I went into labor 3 days before due date and gave birth to a 7lb child. Totally normal. The whole pregnancy i had doctors and nurses commenting...are you eating? are you sure the baby is ok? Are you even pregnanct? I mean...i could keep going. I had a few more then normal u/s. The doc got concerned about 4/5 months when i didnt gain anything. DId the u/s everything looked great.

I just dont gain weight easily. And everyone is probably like...ahh good for you. But not really. after she was born...I dropped to 90lbs. and not on purpose. With no sleep..and eating when i could. ( i went back to work a week after labor) I could barely keep the weight on. It honestly took me 5 months to get back to 110lbs...then i find out my pregnant again...

so here we go again!! SO far no weight gain...but all the while i dont stress. I didnt really with my DD..what can i say im a smal person.

  • I feel your pain. I still have only gained 3lbs throughout this pregnancy. I know that people will say you're lucky, and that you enjoy it, but it's hard to be pregnant and not have the "normal" signs of pregnancy. I feel your pain completely.

I know it's already been mentioned, but your weight pre-pregnancy plays a role. It's far less of a concern if you were the the overweight side to begin with. Since I was an "average" weight pre-pregnancy, they told me they will do an ultrasound to check the baby's weight at about 28 weeks as a precaution but not to worry. I know, easier said than done. It makes me so nervous that I'm going to go in for the ultrasound and see an underweight baby. :(
