Babies: 0 - 3 Months

When does the constant crying stop?

I'm at work for my first day today, and LO is with my mom. She's been extremely fussy lately, and apparently today is no different. She's been having gas issues but she also just seems to cry for no reason a lot. This has been going on for weeks. We've called our pedi multiple times, she's on Zantac for reflux, we've tried gripe water, mylicon, cuddling, rocking, etc, etc. Everybody just keeps saying this is a bad time period for growth and such, and many babies are fussy.

I know everyone says this will end soon, but DH and I are getting worried and we can't see the light at the end of the tunnel. We can't take her anywhere without it ending in disaster. Please tell me it gets better!

  • We were having the same issues, and some days still do. We ended up having to switch from Zantac to Prevacid b/c his reflux symptoms were not getting any better, neither was his fussiness. We just hope and pray he will grow out of it. But we do have good days which help with the bad and you being at work will give you a break so you can go back with a fresh start.

  • Have you tried upping the ounces that she's eating? When DS goes through a growth spurt he is super fussy because he's more tired and because he wants more to eat...he too has reflux and that's frustrating.  Also, have you seen the happiest baby on the block dvd?

  • My little guy was most fussy around that time. He doesn't cry nearly as much anymore.
  • Honestly, the six-week mark is a huge turning point for many, many babies.  Hang in there! You're almost there!  In the meantime, have you tried swaddling, bouncing her while walking, and shushing loudly in her ear or loud white noise?  A pacifier?

The only person that can seem to calm her is DH. I don't know what it is, but she instantly will stop once he picks her up. But honestly, she is over 13.5 pounds already and that takes a toll on his back after hours and hours. She hates pacifiers and shushing doesn't seem to work. She can't sleep unless she's rocked by DH, so since he works all day whoever is watching her just doesn't cut it. She bursts out of the swaddling blankets so fast it's ridiculous, so we've given up.

I'm glad to hear other people went through this! I was beginning to think she might just have a fussy personality.

  • DS is a super fussy baby and I really think it is his personality.  Swaddling and shushing work for a few minutes but then he is back to crying.  I was really hoping that the 6 week mark would be a turning point but for us it wasn't (not trying to be debbie downer!).  I've heard 8-12 weeks is a changing point for many babies so i'm keeping my fingers crossed!.

  • We are going through the same stuff right now and it started right around 6 weeks. I swear it went away for a bit and then when we went for her shots last Thursday she reverted right back to where she was before. It's so frustrating not knowing what's wrong. Sometimes I feel like DD is a "motion junkie" b/c she doesn't seem to be content just being in one spot for very long. I've taken to staying in all day and it's starting to drive me crazy. DH and I have been arguing a lot more b/c of it, too. I'm praying that DD will get over this soon...I'm going back to work in a couple weeks and I'm hoping her daycare provider is a miracle-worker! DD spits up a lot, but her pedi said it doesn't seem to be reflux, so I have no idea what her deal is....she's just FUSSY.
  • I cannot tell you when it will end, but we are going through the same thing.  My son has a ton of gas.  It makes him very fussy and I can tell that he is pain.   My body aches by the end of the day because I am so stressed from trying to comfort the baby and meet my older children's needs  I am signing up for a   class in infant massage.  I am hoping this will relax him and help me aid him in releasing his gas.  Good luck.  It will change.  I know from experience that things do get better.

I think we have the same LO! I'm SO afraid of when she gets her shots next week. I swear she just thinks that when she's awake, then she should be upset or something.

  • Have you considered a food intolerance? Dairy, soy and wheat are the biggest culprits.
  • Sometimes I'm tempted to call the doc b/c I'm afraid there's something wrong and I'm missing it. Makes me feel like a horrible mother a lot of days....the only way she can be content for a long time and allow me to get out of the house at the same time is when she's in her Moby Wrap. I've been trying to go for walks that way b/c she doesn't like her carrier, which means I can't take her for walks in the stroller. Car rides are horrible unless she falls asleep (rarely) and even the swing doesn't work. It's like she loves to be moving all the time, but someone has to be holding her. VERY frustrating....I can totally emphathize with you. I wish us BOTH GL!
  • We are in the same boat here. My DD is on Zantac and it's not helping. We were told that she' ll grow out of it. Very tough on me because my older DD doesn't understand and has to listen to all the crying and gets no attention. So Sad! GL EVERYONE!!! :)
