Shower question....books instead of cards?

I have seen a lot of ladies say that their host did this at their shower...it sounds great and I passed the info to my hostess....but I was wondering, how did they word it or was it just like word of mouth??

I would love to have more books for my babies little library instead of a bunch of cards that will get tossed....

 Thanks in advance!

Re: Shower question....books instead of cards?

  • I put a poem insert in my invitations that read:

From Peter Rabbit to Mother Goose,
    Goodnight Moon and Dr. Seuss,
Curious George and Winnie the Pooh,
    Eloise and Babar, too!
In lieu of a card, please bring your favorite childhood classic.
Let's build a library for *insert baby's name* that will be fantastic!

    Super cute!  I'm stealing this.

  • I just heard about this idea today and I think it is AMAZING!  I absolutely love it!  I will totally be asking whoever ends up throwing my shower to use that poem in the invite.
  • My hostess did a different poem:

    Althought cards are nice

    They're read once or twice

Maybe three or four times at best

    A book is a treasure

    Forever and forever

So instead of a card to be put aside

Please give the little baby a book with your name inside

It will be read to our little tyke

    Before bed each night

And we will thank you forever and forever

  • I've found and saved these:

Although cards are nice with their sentiment
    and prayer,
They're read once or twice then tucked away
    with care.
A book is a treasure, words and pictures unite
Read over and over to teach and delight.
So instead of a card for Baby and
    mother,
Please give a child's book with your thoughts in the cover.
Your book will be cherished; God will watch from above,
When it's read they will remember your
    kindness and love.

We can't wait to see you at the shower
When (mom-to-be's name) will be the woman of the hour
We have one request we hope isn't too hard
Please sign your name to a book instead of a card
Then mom and dad will be ready when the baby arrives
To read to their darling for the rest of their lives

    Bring a Book

As (Mother-to-be's name) due date is coming near,
We're inviting friends and family dear.
To choose a favorite story or fairy tale
That you would like Baby ________ to hear.
Instead of a card, please let (mother-to-be's name)look,
At your special choice of a book,
and then to Baby _________ she will read
With all the love a newborn will need.
So with a personal touch, please choose a book
And in it then your name do put.
It need not cost more than a card
Just pick a favorite, it shouldn't be hard.

I want to be a bright child
As smart as I can be.
    That is why I'm hoping
My mom will read to me.
If you plan to bring a card
    Please take another look,
I would like to learn my ABC's
    From your favorite storybook.
    Please sign your name
    As your personal touch.
    Baby ________ thanks you
    Beary, beary much.

Just one last request, and we hope it's not hard
Please bring baby a book in place of a card
By signing your book, we will remember and share
Your special gift, even when you're not there!

  • so this is my problem with this idea.. .is the gift giver supposed to write inside the book who it's from since it's instead of a card? and what if you get 10 of the same book with notes handwritten inside? just saying.

also, personally - as a guest, I'm not a fan at all of this idea and never partake in it (or the diaper raffle crap) when a guest at a shower. JMO tho

  • Such a cute idea! I love it!
  • I talked with my mom about this when I first heard of it. She said that she thought it was fine as long as I stressed the fact that the book can cost less than a card, she even mentioned putting it in the notes of my registries. She said to make sure that I said garage sale books are great too, people can get them for $.25, much cheaper than a card.

I have every intention of asking for this for my child, I want him/her to grow up to love books and we will not have the extra money laying around for a while to buy him/her new books as much as I would like.
