3rd Trimester

Anterior Placenta Ladies

When I first found out about the anterior placenta around 22 weeks, I was told that once the baby got bigger, I'd be able to feel her through the placenta. So far that hasn't been true. Sometimes I *think* I feel flutters where I know the placenta is, but can't be sure. I do feel her frequently underneath it, right above my pubic bone. My midwives said not to worry as long as her movements seem consistent, but it can definitely make me nervous, especially when her kick counts take a while to complete.

Anyway, just curious what others have experienced now that we're in the 3rd tri.

Re: Anterior Placenta Ladies

  • I had anterior placenta with my daughter.  I *rarely* felt her move...even right up to the end.  It was a little worrisome, but my doc just said as long as I felt her daily it was fine.  This kid moves so much it drives me nuts most of the time.  So I say enjoy the ones that you can't feel as much!  Wink

  • I didn't start feeling consistent movement until 27 weeks. Since then I feel her at least once every day. For some reason, I barely feel her on the weekends, so I'm always at home worrying about whether or not she's ok. This morning she's moving around like crazy! I wish she would just be like this all the time!

  • Its totally normal! I don't feel him as much bc of that anterior placenta, but when he's really active its like a dance party in there! :) Now that I am past my EDD and there's not much room in there when he moves I can def. feel it! :)

  • I have a strong suspicion she's facing my back, too, which would definitely not help in feeling her. Guess I'll just have to make do with the little thumps I feel under the placenta! DH was able to feel her a few times this weekend, so that was nice :)
  • Just the past 2 weeks or so I have started feeling stronger movement. If she is on the sides I can feel the kicks very hard from the outside otherwise they are more dull.
  • It could also just be that your LO is not much a mover and shaker.  I have an anterior placenta, but that only seemed to affect me feeling movement until about the 28th week.  Since then it seems like all this kids does is move and kick and punch.  Also the way he/she is positioned in the womb can affect how well you feel movement.  So long at Dr. isn't worried then I wouldn't be either.
  • I felt her later because of it but after about 24 weeks I started to feel her quite regularly. Sometimes I can feel softer movements with my hand from the outside more than I can from the inside but when she starts kicking/punching up a storm I feel it everywhere.

I had a friend though with an anterior placenta who, when she found out I have one too said that meant I wouldn't really feel her the whole pregnancy. So while not true for me it does happen to some, maybe it's where the placenta is exactly anteriorially.
