Pregnancy Carpel Tunnel?

I am 15 weeks along and the last few weeks I have been waking up in the middle of the night with my arms/ hands asleep.  It used to be only when I laid on my side, but although it is worse when I sleep on my side, now it is happening even on my back.  Anyone else having this problem?  Any suggestions for fixing it?  It makes it really hard to get a good night's sleep when I wake up and my arms are in pain.  Sad

Re: Pregnancy Carpel Tunnel?

  • I've found that keeping my wrists as straight as possible while sleeping helps me.  There are 2 ways that I accomplish this.  Usually, it's sleeping with a teddy bear.  Holding the teddy bear forces my wrists to be fairly straight.  If it gets to a point where even holding my teddy doesn't help, then I put on a pair of wrist braces that I have.  They definitely keep my wrists very straight.

I hate waking up with them asleep.  I think I'm going to have to move towards the wrist braces, because since I've introduced the belly wedge pillow it has made it difficult to hold my teddy.  LOL

  • It happened to me as well... It's not CTS, but it's a pain in the ass.  My wrists would be really really tender and my arm/hand would be numb.  The bad news, I couldn't fix it.  The good news is, it doesn't happen to me anymore.  Maybe it will go away like mine did?!?  I hope so, I do understand what you're going through!  I'm so sorry!

  • I would LOVE for it to go away like yours.  Think good thoughts for me!  :)
  • I use a wrist brace but unfortunately is does not help every night. Like a PP said try to keep your wrist still.

  • I have this exactly and just spoke to my doctor about it.  He suggested I get two wrist braces at the drug store, which I just did, but haven't used them yet.  It shouldn't matter what position you sleep in - when you lie down, all the water retention in your ankles, rest of body, goes to your hands - at least that is how he explained it.  My doctor was concerned because usually this happens later on in pregnancy, and it will only get worse.  If it does, he'll refer me to someone else.  You might want to talk to your doctor about it.
  • By the way, my doctor did confirm it is Carpel Tunnel, just induced by preganancy, rather than typing on a keyboard, etc.
