Back Sleeping: How bad is it?

I cannot sleep on my side.  I've tried everything - body pillows, snoogle, etc.  I always end up on my back by morning.

  • you're fine.  Your body will make you turn before it does any damage.

  • You are sooo not alone! I have the hardest time sleeping on my sides too...when I wake up my sides are sore. But just this weekend I noticed a pressure in my tummy when I lay on my back so I am forcing myself to stay on my sides now which makes for a hard night. Sad
  • I've woken up on my back almost every day so far. Like Moo said, you'll wake up if any part of your circulation is cut off.
  • I sleep on my back more then not. Unless my back hurts, then I sleep on my side.

Dr. says it fine & I will know when/if I shouldn't be sleeping on my back.

  • I've been waking up on my back until recently. However, in the last week or so I feel breathless and slightly nauseaus on my back and I've noticed that I no longer wake up on my back. Trust your body, it knows what to do.

  • The baby will do fine if you don't sleep on your left. They say it's best to be on you'r left because it's less heartstrain on you and your baby gets more blood flow. But it's not like if you sleep on your back the baby won't get it. Idk about you'rs but when my baby is uncomfortable he/she tells me and i have no choice but to move. But some nights it want my back and some it love the left side. You eventually notice the night when the baby wants the left so don't worry and just get the rest you need.
  • I think it's ok, especially if you prop your body up on pillows so you're at a 30 degree angle or so.
  • ME TOO!!!  In my mind I have justified it like this...it is only REALLY bad if you sleep flat on your back. SO I put I pillow behing me and sleep soundly!

We will see some of the other responses!!  Eek.

  • I tried out my new body pillow last night and it's not working for me either. I still woke up on my back at least 3 times. It's good to know my body is waking me up so I can roll over to my side, but it's still uncomfortable to sleep that way.

My body pillow is satin, so even when I propped myself up at a 30 degree angle, I still woke up flat on my back because the pillow had slid out...ugh.

  • I don't think it's too bad.  You'll wake up if your circulation gets cut off.  I actually woke up on my back this weekend in the middle of the night - my hands were asleep!  It was weird, but I rolled on to my side and all was well.  I just stuck an extra pillow on each side of me to try and keep from rolling back on to my back.

  • I do it all the time - can't help it.  My doc said not to worry.

  • I still wake up on my back.  No worries unless you feel like you can't breathe, you get light-headed, or your extremities start to go numb.

  • Doctor said it's worse to sleep on your side if it's uncomfortable b/c it will cause you lower back pain.  She said until about 35 weeks I should sleep in the position most comfortable and that back sleeping, or right side sleeping has gotten negative press, but it's fine until you're much further along.
