3rd Trimester

So what does your Dr. say about swine/flu vaccine?

Seems to be all over the news again re: pregnant women being recommended to get the regular flu vaccine now and the swine flu vaccine when it becomes available in Oct. I'll ask my doc when I see her next week...I know I'll likey give birth before it's available so will be curious what she thinks about getting the regular one now.

  • It probably won't be available in time for you to get it while pregnant...I asked my midwife about it and she said that it hasn't been made available for ordering yet. She said they'd definitely have it when they could get it, but that wouldn't be until at least mid to late October. I do plan to get it ASAP whether I'm pg or not, and to have DH get it as well.

  • She doesn't recommend the regular flu vaccine just because you're pregnant. I won't be pregnant any longer when the swine flu vaccine is available so she hasn't said anything about that.

  • Oh, and they do give the regular flu vaccine to everyone when it becomes available, too. She said I'd get it during one of my regular appts.

  • 2 weeks ago I asked one doctor in my group and he said don't worry about it, that I am due in Oct and it would not be out until then.  Well when I went Friday another doctor in my group said I need both and my husband needs both as well!  I don't usually get the shots but now I am thinking about getting the regular one.  I still don't know about the Swine Flu version.  I hate to be in the 1st group to get it.  Feels like a test subject situation.

  • I'll be getting it after I deliver, but I fall into a high-risk category.

I'm going in today and I plan to ask him what he thinks. I'll post back later!

  • I wouldn't let a syringe carrying that vaccine near me!  They have just developed the darn vaccine.  WAY TO MANY RISKS INVOLVED!  Just wash your hands and keep away from the sick...  DON'T GET THE VACCINE!
  • My doc - who is usually very casual and less strict about "rules" than many others - is pushing for all of her pregnant patients to get the H1N1 and regular flu vaccines. She apparently had a patient who got swine flu and was VERY sick... ICU sick... for a long time, and nearly lost the baby. I was on the fence, but I trust her and like I said, for someone who usually doesn't push, I'm going to listen this time. It won't be out until the end of my pg, but I'll get it anyway.
  • i will be long delivered by the time the swine flu vaccine comes out,  but I work in healthcare and will be getting it so I don't take it home to little one.  Flu vaccines start at work today, while I won't be getting one yet (LO is due Wednesday, not sure how much of the antibodies will cross over), I do intend to ask the MD to receive it prior to being discharged after delivery.

SO already got the flu shot weeks ago (he is AD military) and will be getting the swine vaccine as well.

  • i see my doc tomorrow morning.  ill talk to her about it.  my boss actually came in my office today and told me that i should get the H1N1 vaccine since i am pregnant but i'll have my baby before it does come out.  i have never gotten a regular flu vaccine but i may change my mind this time around.
  • i've never gotten a flu shot in my life, and if it's still coming out in mid-october like i've read, i may have delivered by the time it's out anyway.

the only reason i'm considering getting it is because i'm going to be BF'ing, or at least trying to, and since LO will start a mother's day out program in january, if i can pass along some immunity to him for that, i think that would be good before he gets into a day care situation.

  • My doctor said it would be a good idea to get the regular flu shot. The H1N1 hasn't been proven safe for pregnant women so he didn't encourage me to get that one. I'll still be pregnant when it comes out too.

  • When my daughter was too young to get the regular flu vaccine, her pediatrician recommended everyone that cares for her get it.  So my husband and I got it.  I would imagine that the same goes for the swine flu vaccine.

And for those that are afraid to get it because it is "new"...isn't the regular flu shot technically "new" each year?

A pregnant woman just died here from swine flu so the OB and perinatologist offices are a little concerned about it.  I won't be pregnant any longer when the vaccine comes available, but I'm sure they'll be pushing it on their patients.

  • I won't be getting it regardless of what anybody recommends.  I'll let all the other "live in fear, fear, fear" people be guinea pigs and see what it does to them first.  It's just like any other new poison that is approved/recommended and then SURPRISE 5 years later, there is a arms lengths list of crazy side effects fatalities.  I'll pass.

This is exactly how my doctor explained it to me. It's not a "brand new" vaccine any more than the usual flu shot is.  Of course, there are people who are afraid of that one too..

My dr is very conservative, and he says I definitely need to get both.  Being pregnant, and then having a baby, in flu season puts us at high risk and that is far more risky than the vaccine.

Just an absolute casserole of nonsense.

  • My doctor's office has everyone get the flu vaccine as soon as it is available (so in Sept), but tby he time the H1N1 vaccine comes out, I will probably have delivered, but they said that as new parents, DH and I should get it as soon as we can.
  • My doctor told me that all women in their third trimester should get the regular flu vaccine, because you can pass on the antibodies to your baby.  So I am getting it this Friday (Had to talk my general practitionar into it, as she generally only starts giving the shot on October 1 when flu season really starts).  My husband will get the flu shot sometime in October, so that he can prevent brining the flu home and getting the baby sick.  As for H1N1, my OB stated that I should get it if it is released and available before I give birth.  If it's not released and available until after I give birth, I am hoping to still get it.  I think if you're caring for an infant, you are prioritized.  My husband will also get it as soon as he can (as will my mother who I just know will be spending a lot of tiem with the baby).
