2nd Trimester

MIL's inappropriate comment

I had my first shower on Saturday afternoon hosted by one of my dear friends that I've known since elementary school. It was an older crowd, mostly my aunts and long-time family friends. The only people that showed from DH's entire family were my SIL and MIL. But overall, not exactly a young, wild and crazy group...

Before we started the games, my hostess asked everyone to introduce herself and say how she knows me. My MIL, who I cannot even begin to describe in a single post, busted out with this lovely gem:

"I'm MIL, and my son did this to her."

Indifferent

Thanks, lady. My 82 year old Godmother just heard that.

Other than that, the day was perfect. Good times, good food, good people (minus MIL). And I was blown away by how generous everyone was! And for anyone whose hostess is considering doing the whole "book instead of a card" thing--do it! I got dozens of great books. And amazingly, not a single duplicate!

  • I am sorry, but your MIL's comment made me laugh out loud. Sounds kinda like my bridal shower. My MIL and SIL did nothing to help and just sat at a table while my mom and sisters gave me a beautiful shower. Lucky for me, she kept quiet though ;-)

I asked my mom to do the book instead of a card thing too! My sister and cousin did it and also got so many great books!

  • Your MIL is Classy.
  • I think that is hilarious!  Why is that inappropriate?  It goes without saying that he did do this to you.  Maybe she was nervous with not knowing anyone and wanted to make others laugh.
  • Her comment made me laugh.  My MIL would score big points with me if she blurted out something like that.  I don't think it's inappropriate at all. Everyone knows how babies are made to begin with unless you are a kid.

I agree...it was funny. Nothing to even think twice about, I'm sure she meant no harm.

  • i doubt your relatives were as offended as you seem to think they were.

  • I think it was probably meant to be funny.  I don't see the big deal.  It;s not like she said that she's the mom of the son who did you, or that she was the owner of the car where it happened.  Seriously, chill.

  • Haha, for 1 I probably would have smacked my MIL. You're a stronger woman than I. Wink

    2. I've been wanting to do books rather than cards but I was wondering how you worded that on your invite.

  • I think she was being cute and I actually think it was funny. Kudos to mom for pepping things up a bit!

Sorry, I have to say I agree it was kinda funny Yes

  • i have to agree that i found it funny.
  • I think it's hilarious.  Sounds like she has a good sense of humor.
  • Thats so something my actual mother would say, you should here her and DF get going... just laugh it off it was all in good fun!

  • I don't see my MIL saying that, but my own mother would without a doubt. I can see how it would ruffle your feathers, but like most of the people have said on here, I think she was trying to be funny. I would let it go.
  • I think it's kind of a stupid comment. I mean, OBVIOUSLY!!!

  • Eh, as far as rude and inappropriate comments go, I've honestly heard a lot worse.
  • I think it's funny to people our age, but I agree with the OP that she needs to know her audience!  I would be mortified if someone said that around my grandmother--not because she can't figure out how I got this way, but more because it's not the way her generation talks about things.

  • I found it funny too.  I'm from a family that likes to laugh so my grandmother would have LOL'd at the comment.
  • LMAO.  Sorry, im another one who found it funny!  My family would have found it funny too.
