Anyone have any yard sale advice?

We're going to have a yard sale on Saturday. I've been going through our storage and finding all the stuff that's going. This is the first one that I have done and if anyone has any advice, I'd appreciate it! Thanks gals!

  • Good signs. Advertise on CL too, it's free. That's all I have for now.

  • Ditto CL. ?I posted our community yard sale even though we weren't participating and the crowd in the AM was insane!
  • have clear signage directing them to your house, arrows or balloons etc.  Don't write up too much stuff on the sign-no one can read it when they drive by.

Price things simply-like all clothes 1 dollar a piece or everything on this table is 1 dollar.

Leave your sentimental side inside.  You want to get rid of the stuff right?  So if someone offers you a buck for the angel figurine your G-ma gave you...take it.

  • Make sure that you have a lot of change. For some odd reason, everyone has big bills. Ditto advertising on craigs list, and have good signs up.

  • Ditto the clear signs!! I hate it when people write too much crap on them and love when they put something unique on so it's easier to follow... sometimes I find more then 4 on the same corner and have no idea which way to go for the one I'm supposed to follow... they all look similar but if you put something like the same color ballon on each of your signs, or ribbon or something that will help... I always follow those first and usually forget about the rest cause I don't have time to stop or slow down to read.

  • Check out The Yard Sale Queen!

I always look at her site before we have one. Lots of good tips!

  • Price everything, I can't stand having to ask what the price of something is and if I have to wait to ask (like if the owner is helping other people), I often just won't buy it.  Don't price too high, but be prepared for people to haggle, especially later in the day because people assume you are ready just to get rid of stuff.  Don't price based on what you paid for an item, just because you paid several hundred dollars for it several years ago doesn't mean you're going to get 75% of your cost back.  Have lots of change, a few people paying for $1-$2 items can wipe out your change if everyone pays with $20 bills.

  • Start EARLY, before it gets hot outside.

  • We always have a cooler filled with cold drinks and we sell canned soft drinks for $.50 and bottles of water for $1. We buy the store brands so it's not a huge investment, and I'm always amazed by how much money we make from that.

Of course, it's ridiculously hot outside here in TX, so it may not work as well in other places.

  • To make pricing faster, I make all the "table stuff" (clothes, books, cds, misc crap) one of just a few prices and instead of pricing each item i stick colored stickers on them.  Then have a few posters up that say what price each sticker is.  Goes so much faster.  Put bigger pieces close to the road.  People will stop if they see furniture, tv's, tools.  Since you are willing to sell it, be willing to take whatever someone offers you for it.  At least its gone and you dont have to haul it to goodwill.  And lastly, call your local goodwill or salvation army etc and schedule a pickup for the day of your sale.  That way whatever doesnt sell can be hauled off on the spot.
