Toddlers: 24 Months+

anyone's dc go to bed really late..help

ds wakes up between 6:30 and 7am.  He naps from 1ish-3ish.  I put him in his room lights out by 8:30.  He doesn't fall asleep till 9:45ish.  He keeps getting out of bed and seems wide awake.  Its so annoying getting him to bed.  I don't understand why he isn't tired.  For instance today he got up at 7am, only slept for an hr.  We were at the beach for 3 hours playing in the water.  Im shot!!  Right now its 10pm and he is still up.  what the heck??? anyone else in this situation?

  • no, but has something in his routine changed at all?  is he new to a toddler bed?

  • Yes this all happened around may 30.  Thats is birthday and when he climbed out of his  crib.  We switched him to a toddler bed.
  • if this all started then, maybe he isn't used to sleeping in a toddler bed yet?  does he go to daycare, sleep on a cot there?  i would think to put him to bed when his normal bedtime is 8:30 and let him chill until he falls asleep and try not to check on him or interrupt him and eventually he will get used to the idea.  i would not think he is getting too much sleep yet, he just turned 2.
  • our dd's go to bed at 10:30pm & wake up at 8am. We scheduled it that way though because that is what works for us.

  • This sounds exactly like us!

...up until 2 weeks ago, anyway.

We experiemented with her nap.  And have ended cutting it out altogether.  It's worked very well.  She goes to sleep between 7 and 8, up between 6:30 and 7:45.  She gets a little snoozy looking around dinner time, but she's pretty much on her way to bed by that point anyway.  It's SO nice not to have to fiddle around till all hours to get her to sleep.

  • It almost always takes me DD 1.5-2 hours to fall asleep. No matter if I put her to bed at 6 or 10, she is just slow to wind down. We have a video monitor so I watch her just chilling in her bed. Sometimes she reads or talks to a stuffed animal, but mostly she just lays there. It was the same way in her crib (she's in a toddler bed now).

In the book "The Emotional Life of Toddlers," the author mentions something aboutchildren who are "slow to warm" also being slow to wind down at the end of a day. This very much describes my DD, so I think that's part of it. It makes me feel guilty, though, when she's clearly tired but still takes so long to fall asleep!

And my DD gets up at exactly 6:30 every day, regardless of when she went to bed.

  • We are going through the same thing.  We took away DD's bottles about a month ago and ever since then she has trouble winding down and going to bed.  She has been sleeping in our bed.  We just got her a twin bed and we are going to tackle the cosleeping soon.

She goes to bed anywhere from 10pm to 11:30pm and usually wakes up around 7 or 8am.  She dropped her nap and is exhausted at night but won't sleep.  I feel bad and let her stay up because she enjoys playing without DS and she is so cute.  I need to suck it up and put her to bed earlier.
