3rd Trimester

Is it overkill to have a swing and a bouncer?

I'm registered for both - I actually just got the swing (woot!) but I'm wondering if we'll really need both...our place is only 1100 sq feet, and all one story, so it's sort of starting to seem like overkill...

  • It might be nice to have the swing in the living room and the bouncer can be moved to the bedroom/bathroom/kitchen for when you're doing chores or showering.

We have both, but we have 3 floors and I want to keep the bouncer upstairs. If you're short on space I would say skip the bouncer since you have the swing.

  • NOPE :) loved both for different reasons. If you can I would have both but def. understand your space issue.

  • They serve entirely different functions. When ds was little, I could only shower with him in the bathroom in the bouncer. And he loved to play and sleep in the swing.
  • I don't think so- your LO may hate the swing and love the bouncer or vice-versa! (We have both.)

  • I've heard a bouncer is a good thing to have to take your LO into the bathroom while you shower in, most swings are too big to fit in a smaller bathroom.

  • You're talking about two items that have two very different functions. Some babies prefer the vibrating and bouncing of the bouncer and others prefer the swing. Some don't like either. So it's a trial and error thing and you'll have to see which your baby prefers or if they prefer both.

Personally we'll have both. I keep the swing in a quieter room and the bouncer is usually in the family room and dining room where a lot of the action goes on.

  • We have both, since you never know what will work. I've heard a lot of good about both and many people I know take the bouncer into the bathroom so they are able to get a shower.

  • My place is about the same size as yours- I got a bouncer and a travel swing and they don't take up too much space. I figure she may like one and not the other, so it doesn't hurt to try them both.

  • we've got both -- registered for the swing, and a friend passed a bouncer on to us, and we live in a smallish condo in the city, so i definitely feel your pain!  i feel like baby stuff is taking over our place!  that said, i'm glad to have both so i have options to try when DS is fussy.

  • I have both, the bouncer seems like it will be convenient for when I need to shower and DH is not home and the fact that I can move it easily from room to room is why I registered for both.  I love the swing, but plan on it pretty much staying put in the living room.  I also live in a small townhouse (950 sq ft) but it is on two floors, plus my laundry area is in my basement, so it may be more convenient for me for that purpose, not sure if I would have both if everything was located on one floor.

  • We also have a small place (about 900sqft) and have both. She likes both and each come in handy for different situations!

  • No way, you can easily move the bouncy seat around but not the swing...you will be glad you have both...plus some kids don't like the swing but love the bouncy seat!
  • I initially only registered for the swing, but he didn't like it for the longest time.  He's just started to like it.

I had to get FI to buy a bouncy seat which was a lifesaver.

Now we alternate between the two.

  • I don't think so.  I didn't get my swing so we bought it.  I have heard that babies might not like one or another and finding that out at 3 a.m. is not fun, so we have both and are hoping to use them both :).  I did buy the portable swing instead of the full size one though and that was quite a savings.
  • not at all overkill.

Like pp said, they serve different purposes. For us, the bouncer was for entertainment during my showers, dinner, whatever. The swing was for sleeping. DD would only nap in her swing for the first 9 months, no matter how much we tried otherwise.

  • I don't think it's overkill at all.  I had both and used them both regularly with both kids.  If nothing else, it's nice to switch things up for baby every now and then.

  • We have both, and we use them for different things. Our daughter will only nap in the swing, but likes to play in the bouncer. If I had to choose one because of space issues, I would take the bouncer because it is more portable. You can easily pick it up and move it from room to room (or the bathroom for a quick shower).
  • I returned the swing and the bouncer that we got at our shower and bought a swing that has a bouncer?component?to it. ?I needed a space saver too and wanted something that could be plugged into the wall. ?Its portable too.

Ditto DS #1 hated the swing and slept exclusively in the bouncer until 9 weeks old.

  • I would go for both. Our house is same square footage and I keep the bouncer in the bathroom for when I shower etc...
  • Not at all. They do completely different things. We used both for DS and they were well worth it - even in the apartment we were in at the time.

  • As a new mom, I'd like to add my input. My DD isn't a big fan of the swing, so we get minimal use out of it, but we use the bouncer constantly. She hangs out in the living room when I need to do something and its moved into the kitchen when I cook. I have a used one that just stays in my bathroom for when I shower, get ready, etc. I can talk to her and she plays with the little hanging toys when I'm getting ready and its makes the mornings so much easier. Oh, and if I were to do it over, I would have definitely gotten one of the smaller, travel swings.

  • No, they are totally different things. My nephew loved his swing and hated his bouncer.

  • I had two bouncers and one swing but we have a two story house. With a one story I'd still get a swing AND one bouncer at least.... I used the bouncer in the bathroom while taking a shower and the swing in the living room.

I also put the bouncer on the dining room table and DD had dinner with us every night.

Def. get both if you can... the swing isn't easy to move around as needed.

  • DS didn't like the swing for the first few weeks and actually slept in his bouncer the first couple weeks.  Both are great.  If you find LO likes one more than the other you can always put it away in storage.  We live in an apartment and while it's incredibly packed around here, I wouldn't want to part with either.  They're your key to staying sane.

ETA:  We have the Fisher Price Travel Swing and it's been great having it...I even take it into the bathroom (my tiny bathroom) with me so I can shower while DH is at work.

  • I have 2 swings and 3 bouncers...4 level house and I need a safe place to put baby on each floor.

I actually got a bouncer and a travel swing at my shower last week and set them both up last night - I hope it's not overkill!

  • We got both but thats because I wanted the versatility and portability of the bouncer for when we go to our parents houses, and stuff like that.

  • I dont have children yet, but I have both. All of my cousins are older than I and have children, I noticed that their bouncers came in handy when they first started to feed cereal because they were not quite ready for a high chair, and the swing came in handy when the baby was fussy. The bouncer was also very helpful when they were little to lul them to sleep.

  • We have both, but I planned on keeping the bouncer in the bathroom for the most part for when I shower, but you could probably just use your carseat.

  • Well the nice thing about a bouncer is you can take it with you places easily.
  • No i don't really think so.  Unless you have a swing where the seat detaches and can be moved around easily.  I have heard the bouncer is great to bring in the bathroom with you when you are showering so you can keep an eye on the sleeping baby, i'm not sure if i will do this but at least the option is there.
