I was reading about my pregnancy for week 18 and read that it's possible to hear the babies heartbeat at this stage using a stethoscope. Has anyone tried this? THey are cheaper to buy then a doppler, so I was thinking of picking one up.

I heard you can't find the heartbeat until 20+ weeks with a stethoscope so I don't know that I would go out and buy one. Personally, if I couldn't find the heartbeat, I would be concerned.
I should say that I have tried one with a kiddie stethoscope (you can hear an adult's hearbeat with it), but I couldn't find the baby's hearbeat. I wasn't worried since it isn't a "real" stethoscope and I feel my LO move every day. I guess it depends on you- if it will cause you to worry unnecessecarily, I would say don't get it, but if it will just be something fun, sure go for it.
I just tried this with my stethoscope (I'm an RN so I have a pretty good one). No luck, and I know that there is a heartbeat because I can feel LO kicking. I might try this again tomorrow after our u/s so I know exactly where to listen and see if it works then.
