Poor dd is in pain- what can I do?

When I changed dd's diaper her vulva was very red and raw looking. Wiping her was torture- I was as gentle as I could be, but she screamed in pain, arched her back, and sobbed.

It's been about 30 minutes and she's still crying. If I ask her to show me what hurts she points between her legs and she's walking around the house crying with one hand over her crotch.

Any idea what I can do to help her? I have some gentian violet around and I put some of that on her a few minutes ago- figured that if it's a yeast infection that it will help although I'm not certain that's what it is. Whatever is causing the irritation came on suddenly- she was fine when I changed her a couple of hours ago.

Any other suggestions? It kills me to see her crying while pointing between her legs.

  • When my son was about 1.5, he had a fruit salad at daycare that had oranges in it (his first time with that particular fruit whole), and it gave him diarrhea, but also everything down there got red.  Was her diaper really wet when you changed it?  That could also cause the irritation.  Is it possible that you or your DH could have accidentally scratched her while changing her?  Good luck!

  • She wasn't particuarly wet, but she was quite poopy. It's not a scratch, it's more of an all-over redness and rawness of her vulva.

She does have very sensitive skin and I have to watch it if she eats too much citrus or other acidic food. Otherwise her poop "burns" her skin. She did have some mandarin oranges, but that was a couple of days ago and this irritation is isolated to her vulva- her rear end is totally fine. So I'm kind of thinking yeast...

I'm not sure how pratical this is but could you let her run around with no diaper for a while? Or maybe instead of completely naked just a pair of cotton undies or shorts? Letting it breathe would probably help.

I can't let her go naked because the gentian violet would stain the furniture or rug if she sat down, but she is just wearing a thin pair of cotton underpants in place of a diaper.

She's not fussing as much down, so maybe the burning/pain is getting a little better.

  • I agree with PP -- put her in some cotton undies or let her run naked and let it air out.  Also, maybe some corn starch or Gold Bond to keep the chafing to a minimum?  A warm bath might help, too.

    Poor thing.  That sounds awful.

  • AW!  Her poor little pecpec!  Yeah, maybe a warm bath.  What is gentian violet??  Some kind of organic diaper rash cream or alternative yeast infection cream??  Never heard of it.

ETA - just looked it up.  Interesting.

  • DD has had this a few times. The doctors said it was vaginosis. I told them I keep too clean for it to be vaginosis.

They suggested putting 4 big tablespoons of baking soda in her bath and do it 4 times a day. It cleared up in a day. Now when I notice it starting to happen, I get it cleared up before it gets bad with one bath.

  • Whenever dd has any redness, I put a cup of baking soda in her bath.  Let her soak in it.  Dry her off and put a thin layer of vaseline or aquaphor on her.  It works every time.

What did she eat yesterday/today? My girls have had similar reactions to tomato sauce, b/c of the acidity I guess. Are you using wipes? That could be irritating her too.

Poor girl, hope the GV works! That stuff is so messy
