3rd Trimester

Would you replace a 10 year old crib mattress?

We got our crib set from my aunt and uncle, it's in great condition, however the mattress is 10 years old and hasn't been used in 3 years (they have 2 kids) and has just been sitting in our attic.  It doesn't LOOK bad, it actually looks like new.

Would you replace it or use it? If we replace it we're thinking of going with the colgate classica 1.

  • Yes, I would.  After two kids it may not be firm enough anymore plus it's probably full of allergens that you just can't see.

  • I would get a new one.

  • Perhaps there's a 15 year warranty on it like many mattresses? My aunt son is 10 now, and she still has his mattress, that has a 15 year warranty. My aunt wanted to take advantage of that for me, was able to contact the manufacturer and send us out a brand new one. Sounds cheap, but she insisted on doing it...and hey, we got a brand new mattress for free Smile
  • The lifespan of an adult mattress is 10-15 years, so I wouldn't want my LO sleeping on a 10-year-old mattress.  Spring for a new one.

  • Definitely replace it.

That's a really good idea...do you know what she told them?  My son's mattress has some wear on the edges and I'd love to get a new one for free, I was planning on reusing his.

  • Im in the same position as you. Im not replacing mine, simply because its money I dont have, and its in great condition. As long as its still firm I personally dont see why it cant be used.
  • Yes...I have read many articles that relate old mattresses to SIDS.  I would definitely get a new one...and I would also make sure the crib meets current safety standards. :)
  • I would get a new one for sure. 10 years is pretty old and it has been through two kids, which is quite a bit of use.
  • Absolutely replace it!  In addition to the SIDS risk, it's not as firm as a new one, no matter how it feels now.  We considered reusing our 4 year old crib mattress because we knew its history and still felt firm.  Out of curiosity I looked at them one day at BRU and I was SHOCKED at how much firmer a new one was.  We replaced it.
