Slow tub drain

Anyone have a tried and true EF way to clean out a slow tub drain and get it moving again?

TIA

Re: Slow tub drain

  • Oooh, sooo glad you asked this - I was getting ready to ask the same thing.
  • Loading the player...
  • As nasty as this sounds....get a wire hanger, untwirl it, make a hook and start digging - its hair and you're going to get an S-TON of it. There is usually an internal "trap" that you have to clean too - if you have the kind of tub drain that pops up and down or you twist to "drop" closed, they screw off - with a TON of screwing (remember, righty tighty, lefty loosey!).

    Good luck!
  • Yup, ditto pp. Just pick out all the hair. It is super nasty.

  • One source says:

"Just mix a cup of Borax with some boiling water and empty it down the drain."

     And another says:

"To make this homemade clog buster you'll need 4 cups of boiling water, and 1 cup of powdered sodium borate, more commonly known as borax. You'll find powdered borax in the household cleaner isle of most discount and grocery stores, and it's relatively inexpensive.

Begin by pouring the borax into the drain, followed by the boiling water. Allow it to stand undisturbed for approximately 20 minutes. Finish by rinsing it down with clear running water."

  • We have a stopper that won't come out, so we can't remove hair that gets stuck down there (believe you me, we've tried!)  I've tried baking soda and boiling water, but never heard of the borax one.... I'll try that next time.  I'll be hones though- this is one of those things that DH and I haven't been able to conquer in an EF fashion.  :-(  Hopefully the borax works!
