Anyone's babies have to wear the DOC band/helmet?

Both babies have torticollis and plagiocephaly.  We went for the evaluation at cranial technologies last week and they feel both should get them.  The physical therapist and pediatrician also recommended treatment.  I'm sort of dreading it, feeling like it is going to be a lot more work.  I know they will need a bath every day and they get 1 hour of helmet free time a day.  Just curious what your experiences have been.

I also noticed that most pics of babies in helmets, they are decorated.  Did you just put stickers on it or did you paint it?  And what kind of stickers did you use?  Of course I want to try to make them cute.  :)

Re: Anyone's babies have to wear the DOC band/helmet?

  • My son has had not 1 but 2 bands.  He's been wearing them since January!  All in all, it's super easy.  We clean it everyday with alcohol and he has it off for an hour.  We haven't given him daily baths, but stayed with our every other day routine for the most part.  He is not as accurate with his movements as his brother, so the band has helped him not to hit his head as much!!  Seriously, it's not a big deal at all and we even made it through the summer months in Texas with it on.

I chose to not decorate them.  I didn't want it to clash with different outfits so I just kept it white.  I'm pretty sure if you ask, they can recommend some air brushing places for decorations or you can use stickers.  I've heard the stickers may come off though so you need to seal them on with something so the kiddos don't end up eating them.

  • Both of my sons are getting them too.  They are getting measured for their helmets in two weeks.  I really don't have any advice yet...but you aren't alone.
  • My son wore one for 4 months. We also did not bath everyday. Just washed his hair with a washcloth on days of no bath. He got used to it really quickly and it was no big deal. I'm so glad we did it. It made a huge difference.

We cleaned it with either a toothbrush or wash cloth and alcohol every night. It gets sticky so don't skip a day!

I painted his helmet to look like a Rams football helmet. It was really cute and made it look less medicinal. I figured it was navy and gold so it went with almost anything. And for Halloween he was a little Rams player :) We live in Miami so a lot of people didn't know it was Rams, but the Dolphins helmet is white! (I am from St. Louis). They will tell you what paint you can use. And if you want stickers, you do have to seal them. You have to seal the paint too with something like Modge Podge (sp?) so it doesn't peel off.

The time will fly and you'll be happy you did it. Good luck!

  • Evan has had one for about 5 weeks now and it hasn't been a huge deal.  He had some trouble getting comfortable the first few nights that he had to sleep with it, but that was resolved pretty quickly and he barely notices it the rest of the day.  We do baths every day, but more because it's part of their bedtime routine than for any other reason.  We had  it airbrushed to look like a NY Giants football helmet, but many of the orthotists offer a choice of designs if you don't want to take it and do it on your own.  Good luck!
  • Thanks for asking this!  We had evaluations last Thursday, and while it sounds like at least one of my babies will need one, they want to wait and reevaluate when they hit 4 months.

I was curious about the painting/stickers too.
