Parenting after a Loss

When are they big enough to do without the infant tub?

Now that DH is working, it means that occasionally I'll have to give them their baths myself.  Doing it one at a time in the infant tub is a PITA, not to mention the one not getting bathed is in the other room screaming bloody murder.

It occurred to me (after the fact) that maybe I could have just bathed them together in the tub last night. They are both sitting up well, so as long as I was watching the whole time, it should be ok, huh?

  • someone just posted this question in the last 2-3 days.  I think it got bumped to page 3 or so.

But I think if they are both sitting, you should be fine!!

  • Oops sorry for the repost. I'm so far behind these days!
  • I would try it first with just one, or with both you and the hubs there. ?We didn't take the infant tub with us when we went on our trip recently, and K did great in the tub with some of the bigger kids. ?But when we got home and tried it, he slipped all over, and even with me holding him he managed to conk his head. ?We got a no-slip mat and it's helped a bit, but he still wants to crawl all over and stand up, and he's very slippery when wet! ?Two might be very hard to handle on your own. ?I have been debating the duck tub, I think that would be a lot easier and maybe both of yours would fit it at once? ?We just have no place to stow it...tiny bathroom, tiny house.

  • I would think once they are sitting up its fine. We just got the infant tub and he LOVED it last night. I'm not sure if you could fit both of them in it though. He just seemed happier and more comfy than the infant tub.
  • we just put andrew in the big tub last week. could you maybe use 2 duck tubs at the same time in the regular tub if you are worried about them tipping over or something?
  • hadley outgrew the sling that we used in the sink so we moved her to the duck tub in the regular tub.  she LOVES it.  she either reclines a bit so that it looks like she is chilling out or she sits up and splashes in it.  and, since it is soft, if she falls backwards she doesn't get hurt.  highly recommend it!
  • if they are sitting well, then yes, definitely!

I bathed Avery in a laundry basket in a bath tub for a few weeks before she was really super steady.

  • yeah, the slipping would make me nervous but definitely give it a try with DH there.
  • Ok thanks guys. I would love to find a way for them to be able to interact and play in the tub. sdl: Lol at the laundry basket!
  • it totally worked though!  you might consider those round bath seats too.  We thought about it but by the time we decided to buy one, Avery was sitting up well enough on her own.

I don't know your babies and their abilities, but I know Avery was DEFINITELY sitting well enough by 8 months - it was probably around 7 months that she was a little unstable (but she is a really good sitter so I can't say for other baby's abilities)

if your tub has a slippery bottom, you could get a padded mat too.  ours has a skid free bottom and the mat was a pain because it slipped all over the place.

I used a towel a few times - it just got completely soaked but it was some padding for her if she fell

  • maybe a rubber mat for the bottom- be less slippery

  • Samantha was a steady sitter, so we've bathed her in the big tub since 6.5 months.
  • I just posted about this the other day and Lata suggested using a laundry basket.  Natalie is a good sitter so I put her in the laundry basket in the big tub - I put a non skid mat on the floor of the big tub so the basket didn't slide around.  She LOVED it...she liked to be able to sit up and her toys stayed contained in the basket.  It didn't seem so overwhelming too since she was contained in the basket.  We'll probably do this for a few weeks and then skip the basket and go right to the big tub.  I would say that the first time you try anything different you pick a night your H is home to help out though but they will probably love to play and splash.  You only need a very small amount of water too so gosh forbid if one does slip they won't be in a huge amount of water.  Babies sure are slippery when wet though!  LOL
