I went back to the perinatologist today and they did a transvaginal ultrasound and then a regular sonogram to check up on things. The great news is that my cervix is 4.2 and is closed! I had two "episodes" over the past two weeks since I was there last, but they were very minor and not nearly intense as before. The baby is measuring on track and all looks good.
They did find that my amniotic fluid is a little higher than what it should be, by about 1 cm. The doctor thinks that this could be due to a high intake of fruit, carbs, juice.... except I really feel like I don't eat that much of things. I've been drink 80-100 ounces of water daily due to the cramping, and maybe once a day (16 oz) I'll let myself have watered down juice or a vitamin water. As far as fruit goes, I do eat maybe 2-3 servings a day (an apple, grapes, etc). but isn't that normal? And for carbs, I've been having a wheat pita at lunch filled with humus and veggies. Yes, we've had pasta/rice 2-3x the past week but is that considered more than the norm? I'm still not a fan of eating lots of meat so I'm at a loss as of what to do.
Any food/meal recs? In the meantime, I called my OB about my GD test results and I was 2 pts lower than the normal range - so def. no sugar issue there.
So, I'll continue to have ultrasounds/sonograms to check up on things and monitor the fluid. In the meantime, anyone have any thoughts on how I can change my diet? I feel like I'm already eating pretty healthy!
Re: Another Appt. Today
Hi Megan! I'm glad to hear that your cervix is nice and closed...that's a relief. How weird about the diet thing though. The GD diet is actually a really good one and my dr. said that it is the diet everyone should be following. Basically it's all about cutting out simple sugars and limiting carbs. Here is what I had to do...
Breakfast: No more than 30g of carbs...NO fruit or juice
Mid morning snack: No more than 15g of carbs
Lunch: No more than 40g of carbs
Mid afternoon snack: No more than 15g of carbs
Dinner: No more than 40g of carbs
Evening snack: No more than 15g of carbs
Breakfast usually consisted of eggs and one slice of wheat toast, snacks were usually cheese with a couple crackers, sugar free applesauce, small apple with peanut butter, nuts, half a bagel. The BIG thing with the GD diet was reading labels and only have the serving suggestion that is listed on the label. It was actually an awesome diet because I am 18lbs. LESS than I was when I got pregnant. It sounds like you are eating healthy already but it was a huge eye opener for me when I started reading labels and only having the serving size...I thought I was eating heathy too until I went on this diet. Good luck to you!!
Hey Lesli! Thanks so much for posting this! That information is really helpful. I've been reading labels since but still hadn't figured out what my carb intake should be at each/meal snack. And all of those things you listed as options I like, so that is a start.
Do you know if I have to cut out all of my fruit all together? That is going to kill me! They said even veggies like carrots have a higher amount. Any idea how to find out which fruits have how many carbs?
Thanks for your help!
No I didn't have to cut out fruit completely...I just couldn't have it in the morning hours (that is when your body's sugar is the highest). Here is a breakdown on the fruit. Each of these servings equal 15g of carbs.
3/4c of strawberries
Half a banana
1/2c of blueberries
1 small sized apple
1/2c of pineapple
17 small sized grapes
Those are the ones I can remember off the top of my head. Yes, carrots are high in carbs and so is corn. I could only have small amounts of those items..like 1/3c for a serving.
Let me know if you have other questions. I was shocked with the amount of carbs in certain foods. I love to eat fruit too however I couldn't eat too much of it. Good luck!!
Lesli, were there any websites or places that you found information to be the most helpful?
I'm going to talk to my OB Wednesday when I go in about if those carb guidelines (per meal/snack) are good for me to follow or not. So far today, I've been pretty hungry so I just need to find the right mix of foods to keep me full.
