OK so I am confused about the fact that books and "experts" say BFing
shouldn't hurt if it's done correctly. I'm pretty sure I'm doing it
correctly--have read and watched videos, even saw a lactation
consultant--but my nipples still burn. Once in a while they don't hurt
and it's great. But I am usually in pain during the feeding and can't
wait for them to end. Afterwards they continue to burn mildly for a
few minutes. LO has no signs of thrush. I have tried Lansinoh and I
also have a triple nipple cream from a local BFing cener. Is the
burning pretty normal and will it get better in a couple weeks or
should I go see another lactation consultant?? TIA.
Re: burning nipples
I was wincing and crying through feedings.I also had the burning sensation at the nipple and throughout the breast for a couple minutes after feedings. I went to an LC to figure out what I was doing wrong- the only thing she could come up with was putting LO's head a little higher than I'd had it. That helped a smidgen, but it was still pretty excruciating.
The LC said that she'd worry about the pain if it ocurred when LO came off the breast. She said that could be a sign of a fungus.
This weeks the pain is gone. Magically, as far as I can tell! Here's hoping you have the same magical experience soon!
Do your nipples blanch (lose color) while your LO is feeding? If so, that could be the cause of the burning pain. Generally blanching is caused by improper latch. There is some information on kellymom.com about nipple blanching.
I had a lot of burning pain and the OB and pedi started treating us for yeast; however, I was not convinced so I saw the LC. She said that we were having problems with blanching.. not yeast. We weren't having latch issues.. my body was actually doing it itself, but I have been on a new medication for about a week now and the burning pain is definitely subsiding some.. not completely gone yet but its definitely A LOT better.
All good suggestions, and I just wanted to add that I HATE that LCs tell you it shouldn't hurt. I know a group of 10 BFing moms who were all successful, and 9 of them would tell you it hurt like hell that first few weeks, though only one of us had any real trouble with latching. I think that all that saying that does is shock the hell out of an already shocked new mommy.
