What is your understanding about High FSH in younger women (30-ish)? Is it simply an indication of poor ovarian reserve? Or do you think it indicates poor egg quality? Are miscarriage rates higher for younger women with high FSH when compared to same age low FSH women? Or is it just more difficult to get pregnant? I keep finding vastly different opinions on the topic and was wondering what your understanding is or what your doctors have had to say.
Re: Quality vs Quantity and high FSH
My RE told me that it's quality over quantity. He told me that even though my FSH is insane (over 60), the few eggs that I have left are still only 26 years old. His exact words to me were "age trumps everything." I never really asked about miscarriage rates, so I'm not sure about that.
There is really very little hope for me because of my low antral follicle count (1-2 follies if I'm lucky) combined with that insane FSH, but if you still have some follies and you're young, my understanding is that your eggs should still be pretty good.
I'm 31 and have borderline-high FSH (11.1). My understanding is that age is the more important factor with regard to quality. I was told that I am more likely to miscarry, but I don't think significantly more so. (I think part of that might have to do with the fact that women using ART are more likely to test early and therefore know about a miscarriage/CP that might otherwise have gone unnoticed.)
Even with my FSH level being high, I have gotten pregnant on my own twice (one ectopic and one m/c). I'm hoping that all I need is a little kickstart from Clomid.
