Shady Grove Question

I have heard that if you have tests done w/your ob/gyn Shady Grove makes you repeat them all when you start with them.

Does anyone know if this is true?

That is not true at least not 100%. Every test is different and depending on what they are, it might be important for SG to run them again or the results were old.

I had gone to Dominion Fertility (are are awful BTW) prior to Shady Grove and had all my standard/preliminary tests done there so I didn't need to go through any while I was there however, there was not much time between when I was at DF and when I went to SG so the results were all current.

Also, OBs are not really qualified to perform the tests you need for infertility. They can do one here or there but there are standard tests that most if not all fertility clinics will make you go through prior to setting up a treatment plan.

    It's really case by case.

    Wasn't true for us.

I agree with pp. We had basic tests done (day 3, hsg, day 21, SA) with my obgyn. The SA results triggered our appointment with Shady Grove, and our doctor there chose not to repeat some of them - we did have to have the results sent over in preparation for our 1st consultation.

We did have a whole other battery of tests done (mostly blood tests) before they will submit for insurance authorization for IUI, but they only chose to repeat 2 of the tests we'd already had done and it was for a good reason.

    Thanks for the info.

My ob/gyn wants to do an hsg - but I think I am going to push to go to Shady Grove for that.  I was strategizing w/my sil tonight about how to get a referral.

You don't need a referral for an RE. You can make an appt. on your own.

For my referral, I just called up my PCP office and requested it. I said I'd been working with my obgyn for over a year and they recommended I see an RE so I wanted a referral to Shady Grove for infertility treatment.

They didn't even bat an eye, just did the referral and mailed it that week. I would try that route. I know my insurance wouldn't have allowed my obgyn to do my referral despite the fact that I'd been working with her exclusively about this for more than a year (health care system at it's best! Stick out tongue).

Guess it just differs with each insurance co. I had preexisting conditions so we just went straight to the RE when we started trying and Ob/Gyn was fine with that.

it does differ depending on your coverage and plan (hmo vs. ppo etc). my insurance required a referral from my pcp for a visit to an RE. any specialist, really, they require it.

I would definitely recommend that you go to Shady Grove for the HSG.  I really liked the facility in the Rockville office for that and I felt more comfortable than at a Radiology place.  I'm not sure if any of the other offices can do an HSG.
