Any of your DC had their adenoids out?

I took Alex to an audiologist yesterday because of my concerns about his hearing.  Sure enough, he fell in the mild hearing loss range and she also noticed that he mouth-breathes and she said there was fluid in his ear.  His last ear infection was like 3 weeks ago - he really has only had 2 that I remember, but they've been doozies.    Anyway, she said the fluid should be gone by now.  And obviously, I am concerned that he does have hearing loss, but she said it shouldn't be permanent.  She told us to see the ENT, and we were lucky to get an appt. for today.  I asked her if the persistent fluid meant tubes, and she said they probably wouldn't jump right to that, would try other things first for a few months, etc.  This guy looked at Alex and said they call it "glue ear" - fluid / mucous that just doesn't ever clear completely.  He said Alex was really congested in there and that he thinks his adenoids must be very large, preventing it all from draining properly.  Given that his hearing has been compromised since April, he doesn't believe it will clear on its own anytime soon and wants us to have his adenoids out and tubes put in.  I'm on board, mainly because I had the exact same, relatively minor surgery when I was 3 years old, but Don's a wreck and thinks we need another opinion.  The ENT did say we could try allergy meds for a few months to see if that works, but 90% of the patients who do that end up with the surgery, just a few months later.

I guess I am looking for what you would do, your experiences, etc.  Thanks.

Re: Any of your DC had their adenoids out?

  • DS hd his removed in April and also had tubes placed in his ears. THE BEST THING WE HAVE EVEEEEEEEEEEEER DONE! Surgery was quick we were there less then 2 hours which included 30 mins of prep and waiting on his turn the 30 mins of surgery and then maybe 45 mins of him calming down after waking and having to drink something before letting us leave. We were home by 10 he napped then by 1 he was playing outside. It took him a good 2-3 days to really want to eat anything other then cheerios and goldfih but we just let him set the pace. He was not quite 2.5 at the time. He had EI's like every month. The ENT said that he would decide once he placed the tubes and DS was asleep whether he needed his adneiods removed (once he could see in there and tell if they were red and enlarged) Sure enough they were huge. Before DS would keep a constant runny nose (and he's not in daycare) since we have had ZERO problems with a runny nose he just acts better all around. ENT said enlarged adneoids and fluid buildup is what contributed to the EI's. Hope this helps. We would do it agian in a heartbeat. It's tough letting them take your DC out of your arms and DC wondering what's going on when they wake up etc.. but DS hasn't mentioned it since.
