Breastfeeding

Pumping: Nothing coming out!

i breastfeed LO A LOT..he has an insatiable appetite, so i'm trying to pump after feeding him to supplement him. Except that, i think he's sucking me dry, because when i pump afterwards, nothing comes out! a few drops on a good day, but other than that, that's it.

i thought the more you nurse, the more i'll produce. i'm certain that he is getting enough b/c he gained 11oz in 2 weeks!

Re: Pumping: Nothing coming out!

  • i am having the same problem and posted something similar yesterday.  a lot of girls responded that it might not work until around a month (not sure how old your LO is) and around that time a more plentiful supply might be established.  gl and i feel your pain

  • I have the same problem som,me days.  My DS eats a lot.  I can get about 2 oz first thing in the morning, but other than that I only get 1/2 oz or so.  I keep hoping I will start to produce more, but so far I am just keeping up.  I am off to buy some Mother'r Milk Plus today.  This soon though I wouldn't worry.  You are probably in the 2 week growth spurt as well and may stop eating quite so much soon.
  • I've never had much luck pumping right after a feeding, unfortunately.  My DS eats on both sides 90% of the time and sucks both of them dry!

Try pumping about an hour after LO is done.

  • Based on your ticker, I'm assuming your LO is only two weeks old total.  At this point, you're still establishing your supply.  If you continue to pump after a session, you'll probably start to get some milk.  You may also want to try pumping at a time when your LO hasn't eaten recently.  Maybe an hour or two afterwardsifyou can).  Sometimes, too, some women have a hard time getting anything out with the pump.  I was never able to get more than a couple of oz. even when DD was older.
