Our nanny thinks the cleaning ladies stole $

Today our nanny told us that she thinks our cleaning ladies took money out of her purse.  Evidently she had $300ish dollars in cash and a $400 check from Boston Market (where she works on weekends) in her purse when she came to work on Wednesday.  She leaves her purse and a bag on a bench in the front hallway every day.  The cleaning ladies came as usual - the nanny normally hangs out in the play room with the boys while they clean.    When she left our house, she drove straight to the bank to deposit the money and found the envelope was gone.

I called the lady who runs the cleaning company to let her know our concerns.  I was careful not to accuse but wanted to make her aware.   Later this afternoon she called me back and said she talked to each of the three ladies who were at our house on Wednesday and they didn't own up to anything.  She went on to say that one of the ladies has been with her for seven years and the other two for around four.

It's an awkward situation - the only way the nanny will be able to prove who did it is if they are able to figure out who cashed the check.  Evidently she called the corporate office of Boston Market and they verified the check was cashed.

Anyway, all this to say, should DH and I offer to replace some of this money?  We are thinking that maybe we can replace the cash since there is NO way to get that back or prove who took it.  Would it be a nice gesture since the alleged theft took place at our house or is it setting some sort of precedent we may regret later?  I just can't decide.

  • That would be very nice of you. Perhaps, you could also give the nanny a secure place to put her bag.

Are the police looking into who signed the check?

  • No- if it were me i would not replace the cash. I would give her a secure place to put her belongings from here on out.

please tell your nanny- to investigate a fraudulant claim is placed on the company's (boston market)- account. can easily be done because this is check fraud. (something i work a lot with)

  • That sucks!  Is the cleaning service bonded?  I might have them file a claim with their insurance company and have Boston Market's bank look into the check issue.  She definitely needs to keep her purse in a better place and deposit cash directly into the bank!
  • I just have to say since my family runs our own fast food franchise that Boston Market is not responsible for this. The nanny needs to file a police report for the cashed check.  Most check cashing places have video cameras to see who cashed the check and when. She should let her employer know that the check was stolen but it is not the company's responsibility to pay her again since check was stolen and cashed after the company had given it to her.  Maybe they will replace her check but I highly doubt it.

I would definitely give her a place to lock up her belongings and make sure your stuff is taken care of as well so this won't happen to you.  We always have our personal/financial stuff locked up when our cleaning ladies come even though they have worked for us for 6 years.  Better safe than sorry.

agree.  What an awful situation.  I'd also try to be fully cooperative with giving names, contact info, or whatever she needs for the investigation, if you can.

  • Has a police report been filed? I'd be curious to know if your nanny would be open to filing one. If they wanted to find out who cashed the check they certainly could.
  • I asked her this morning how things were going with the check and she said an investigation is underway.  She was told it could take up to a month.  Not sure if that is a police investigation initiated by her or something Boston Market is doing though.

In the mean time we decided not to replace the cash. We figured if I had money stolen out of my purse at work the company wouldn't replace it.  But, we are offering her opportunities to make extra money.  We are going out this Friday night and she agreed to stay with the boys so she will pick up an additonal $100 then.
