Do you have family nearby that watches your child? Or do you have a regular sitter?
DH and I live with no family around us at all. We really don't have a sitter we use, either. I don't know anyone with teenagers, and most of our friends are married with kids of their own or married with lives of their own. I can count on one hand the number of dates we've gone on in the last few years.
Partially it's because we work opposite schedules... so the lack of care isn't the ONLY reason we don't get out often with each other one-on-one.
Can you suggest where I can find a regular sitter?
Re: For those of you who go on a date once a month or more...
Yes, both sets of grandparents live in neighborhoods less than a mile from ours. DH's parents are retired and are available almost any time...during the week. My parents work and are available on weekend nights. Since DH covers all shifts including overnights his days off are very random. So, we don't always have date night on the weekend. There are lots of highschool/college aged girls in the neighborhood that babysit too.
me = you
we live 22hrs by car away from our families. we work alternating schedules. I try to plan a weekend free a month to have as a family and that is spent as the 4 of us. dh has more flexibility over the summers, but still works a ton (he's a professor) but the semester is starting again... waaaaa. means we see each other... oohhhh ... never. he leaves at breakfast... comes home after the kids are in bed... I work weekend 12hr nights.. sometimes work a weeknight here and there to get a free weekend together. sucks. we go out on dates when family comes to town or when we go to family. for us, it's primarily the schedule... but also we don't have a regular sitter... we just haven't needed it since we're rarely awake enough to go out on a real date. we just try to make date nights at home.. put the kids to bed.. watch a movie, play a game... but even that is rare during the school year. sucks.
as far as finding a sitter... do you have a college nearby? 4 yr or jr college... check with sororities (if a 4 yr is around), some have babysitting lists with numbers and hours available. what about church, local h.s., any friends have little sibs or nieces nephews, ??? do you belong to a playgroup? share babysitters???
