When the teacher came to our house to do some sort of assessment, she wanted to know how high he could count. I said it is endless. She wanted me to state the highest number I've heard. So, I said --- well, let me give you 2 examples. One morning, he got up and counted backwards from 900. And then there was the time he pointed at $60,000 and read it to me correctly. I think he just 'gets' numbers. Endless.
If you study clocks long enough (yep he does that) I guess at some point you just get it.
