Are avocados safe to eat if....

You've cut into it and it's been sitting in the fridge? What if it's been sitting on the bench overnight?

I'm thinking about listeria and the whole always wash fruit and vegetables. But obviously avocado isn't somehting you can wash.

So is it ok to eat? There's a half avocado that got left out on the bench overnight. Ordinarily I would definitely eat it.

Any thoughts?

Re: Are avocados safe to eat if....

  • Was it covered? If so, I'd probably eat it but I'm not food/germ phobic.  In order for listeria to be a problem, listeria would have had to have been in the whole avocado to begin with, (unlikely) or it would have had to have "infected" the avocado overnight.  Listeria isn't a bug that hangs around in the air and lands on things so that's not likely either.

If it was uncovered, I'd just cut off the top layer and eat it.

  • left in the fridge I would just scrape the top layer of oxidation off.

I dont know what bench  you are referring to, but if you mean like left out on the counter cut open, I wouldn't eat it on a normal basis so no.

  • I personally wouldn't if it had been left out cut in half all night.  If it hadn't been cut I would though.  It's not listeria you have to worry about, but there could be other germs on it now.

  • It'll look a little ugly but isn't going to hurt you.  There's a lot of oil in avocado.

  • Thanks for the feedback. I went ahead and ate it after cutting off a good chunk of the top.

I'll let you know if I go down in a horrible heap.

  • I'm sure you'll be fine :)  I think in general people are overly paranoid about "germs"...

  • yeah I think you're right. I'm a big believer in building a healthy immune system.

At the same time though, I know I would never forgive myself if somehting happened to my baby because I ate something which was completely avoidable so I'm being very concious of listeria and what have you.

  • I think you are safe. As you said you did cut off the top half, anything that was exposed to the air was removed. Plus throwing out a good one is a shame.
