If you're getting induced

Have you always planned to be induced? Did you want to be induced? Did you not want to be induced, but now you have to be?

I just feel like there are sooo many posts about women being induced and I'm finding it to be very discouraging. Don't get me wrong, to each their own, but I REALLY don't want to be induced and have talked to my midwife and know that they'll allow me to go to 41weeks before scheduling an induction date for me. I don't know, maybe i'm just reading the wrong posts, but it seems like there are a lot of inductions out there.

So I'm just wondering if the women out there with induction dates have them because they wanted them or if they only have them because they're getting over due and their dr. are requesting they schedule an induction.

I just really want to go naturally and am getting freaked out by all the induction posts.

Re: If you're getting induced

  • Our doctor suggested we schedule an induction at 39 weeks because of excessive amniotic fluid (risk of cord prolapse) and because the baby's head is measuring 3 weeks ahead.

I would have preferred not to be induced, but I trust my doctor's judgement.  The thing about going "natural" is that mother nature doesn't care whether you die!  Women and babies used to die because babies got stuck in their pelvises or cord prolapse or whatever, and thankfully, because of modern medicine, we don't have to worry as much about that anymore.

That being said, I'm going to try every OWT in the book to get him to come on his own before our scheduled induction!

  • i also don't want to be induced... but i think most people have their induction date scheduled for one reason or another. i don't think you can "choose" to be induced.

    i may be wrong thou.

  • I definitely don't want to be induced, but if it becomes medically necessary I trust my doctor's decision. My mom asked to be induced with my sister because her OB was going to be on vacation on her due date and he induced her lol.

  • I'm getting induced some time between 37 and 39 weeks...I'll hopfeully find out next week. Ours is for medical complications with baby though. They're going to try everything for me not to have a C-section...I'm really to the point where I don't care how he comes out or what it takes as long as he's as healthy as he can possibly be at this point and we're both ok.

  • Barring serious medical issues, you can pretty much avoid induction if it is that important to you. The other side is that you can get one for a reason such as "maternal discomfort" or something else after due date if you choose that.
  • Trust me, induction was never even a consideration until my due date came and went with no baby.

Being induced next week because i will be over 41 weeks pregnant. Clearly it gets dangerous to go way overdue so my drs. are inducing me on Tues./Wed. At this point, I say bring it on! At this point my priority is to get this baby out!

  • I feel like there is a post or (multiples) like this everyday. It seems to be split down the middle - those that are disgusted by induction, really want to avoid it, and those that have to defend themselves by why they are getting one or want one. It's really funny because everyone usually writes how "worried/concerned" they are about amount the induction posts, etc.. let's let the OB/GYN's worry about each individual patient - no need for bumpies to be worrying about other bumpies, there are far too many other things to be thinking about in the 3rd tri... right?!
  • i am being induced if i am favorable one week before i am due.  i requested it and am looking forward to it.  my mom lives far away and i need her there with me and my husband of course.  so it is just easier for us.

  • I will be induced when my cervix becomes "ripe" as I had a FAST labor with DS, and live 45 min from the hospital. That being said, if it happens that I am not favorable until after my due date, we will wait until then. It is not about getting done earlier for me, it is more about a safe delivery, and I am not brave enough to do it on the side of the road.
  • I absolutely did not want to be induced, however I have cholestasis, and while it is just uncomfortable for me, it can be very serious for the LO.

  • I also was not in favor of induction....however because of GD they want to induce at least a week before to make sure baby doesn't get too big.....so I trust my doc judgment.
  • My Dr suggested to schedule to be induced a week before my EDD and I couldn't be happier!! I trust her 100% and know she would not do it unless she thought it was necessary. Due to my history of a large baby and the fact that I'm 3-4 cm dilated already, I can't wait to get him out!!

I'm very surprised how many bumpies are so against this...shouldn't they trust their Dr's??

Just like any medical procedure inductions carry risks and trusting your doctor blindly is never a good idea

  • I am getting induced at 38.5 weeks due to gestational hypertension. I dont have a problem with it at all. I didn't "plan" on it. But I think its great that LO is coming a little early.
  • I would much rather spontaneously go into labor than to be induced but ever since I went passed my due date I've had issues w/swelling and slightly elevated BP so I am allowing my doctor to induce on Tuesday.  I will be more than a week overdue so I'm comfortable with the health of the baby - just worried about labor being more difficult since it's something my body isn't trying to do on its own.
  • Because my sister is getting married when I'll be 41 weeks (assuming I will not go before then), my doc has CONSTANTLY suggested induction to me and is kind of being pushy about it.  I told her I do NOT want to be induced unless medically necessary.

i do not have high BP, GD, or any other medical reason (i don't count "big baby" in that - just my opinion), but I don't have that either.  In either case, so far, this pregnancy has been "normal" and there's no reason to push induction other than for convenience and I'm not down with that.

She told me this week that she will not let me go past 42 weeks and that is fine...but I am just "risking" it until then.  There are docs who will give the choice and to me, I just think it's irresponsible.  There is a reason my baby has not come out yet, so he gets to stay in...if it ends up that I am in the hospital on my sister's wedding day, that will suck, but his health is more important.  And, having a med-free birth is super important to me, too, so I'm not interested in being pushed into an induction just to accommodate my sister or doctor.

    This exactly for me.

  • I was induced. I didn't plan on it or really want to be induced. We did it at 39w 5d because she was measuring small and the doctor was concerned about iugr and I trusted her judgment.

I had the absolute best induction possible.
