root canal anyone?

I went to the dentist yesterday and apparently one of my teeth had a hole in it or something and it was decayed pretty deep down, close to the root.  Background:  I've been getting headaches on the right side (tooth is also on the right) of my head for a few months now, but I am prone to one-sided headaches so I didn't think much of it.  After the dentist filled the cavity yesterday, I had one of the worst headaches of my life all night long.  I couldn't sleep.  This morning I called them and she had me come back in and she did a root canal hoping to alleviate the pain.  I had a root canal once years ago and I do remember that the pain was gone right away.  But now it's been a couple of hours and the headache is back again in full force.  I just don't know what to do.  Is this typical?  Will it take a few days for the headache to go away? If you made it this far, thank you.

Re: root canal anyone?

  • I took vicodin with my 3 root canals to stop the pain and headaches.  It should resolve itself soon, but take some heavy duty painkiller to stop it now.  The vicodin worked for me.

  • I'm so sorry! I would give it at least until tomorrow. For now take Tylenol or whatever the dentist may have given you for pain. If it's still hurting tomorrow I would call. Try to rest up tonight. (((((hugs)))))

  • Usually the pain is caused by an absess or an infection. I had to take antibiotics to clear up an absess on my very back, top molar before the oral surgeon would do the root canal. You said the regular dentist did you root canal?!? That's odd.

Well, I would presume that they got all the infection out before they did the root canal (they use that clorine water to rinse after they drill out your old nerve canals). Aside from some soreness... your tooth pain should be at a minimal.

I would investigate other causes of your headaches. Have you had your eyes check recently???

  • When I had my first root canal, I was so tense.. I held my mouth open for way too long, too. I had a stabbing headache that went from my temple all the way up to above my eye. I finally killed it with advil. NSAIDs for the win!

I was put on antibiotics after every one of them, too.
