Why Do IF Meds Make You Gain Weight?

I always see people saying that IF meds cause weight gain - do you know why?  Is it limited to certain types of drugs or is it across the board?  Does it happen to everyone pretty much or does it affect everyone differently?

Re: Why Do IF Meds Make You Gain Weight?

  • my understanding is they make you retain water, some increase your appetite and most people have their exercise restricted when stimming which can lead to weight gain if you don't tailor down your diet.
  • Loading the player...
  • they can cause temporary weight gain due to bloat, but my more long-term weight gain hasn't been from the meds themselves, but because I was restricted from exercising. I cycled pretty continuously for 2 1/2 years, so that's a long time not to be doing regular exercise.
After 5 years of TTC, 3 IUIs, 5 IVFs, 2 FETs, multiple losses and an adoption that wasn
  • i gained 12lbs on my first round of femara/ovideral.  im on try 2 and i can feel my clothes are shrinking again. god only knows how much im going to be gaining this second round.....

  • For me, I can't honestly say if it's the meds or just an excuse :(  but the stress does make me eat more and then I can just blame it on the meds.  Plus, I'm so scared to exercise in the 2ww and while stimming even.  They do make me terribly bloated though!  Especially the injectibles bc you gain a lot of fluid.  I have gone on cycles and then lose weight the next month when I'm off of them and on BCP's.
  • i have no idea....   but i've been slowly gaining weight over these last 6 months, and i can't lose it as fast as i used to.     i could always drop a good three pounds with 2 weeks of good eating, and now i just gain weight or stay the same, no matter what i eat, and it seems like no matter how much i work out.    its annoying.    i've never been as heavy as i am today.    i'm fairly petite, and the weight gain has only been about 8ish pounds, so i'm still within a healthy range, but its still frustrating.

That's crazy!  Do you think it was water weight since it was your first IF treatment?  Did you lose it after you were finished with the cycle or did it stick around?

  • I agree I think the meds and not exercising as much during the 2ww are part of the issue but the stress has made me gain too.

I am in a similar situation - I am only 5' tall and have gained about 8 lbs. in the past year and a half.  I can't attribute it to IF treatments - I think it started happening after my wedding.  But I haven't changed anything really drastically so I don't really know where it's coming from.

  • question: is it bad to exercise during the 2ww?  I thought exercise helped fertility?

Weight has been a big issue on my IF journey.  I'm my biggest weight ever too and unhappy, but feel I shouldn't diet while TTC.  My obgyn said I could, ie that only truly restricted diet, a la aneroxia would effect IF, but I just have trouble believing that.
