Exercising and 140 BPM Heart rate

Hi Ladies,

Has anyones Dr. said anything about keeping their heart rate below 140 BPM?  I bought a heart rate monitor and the only way I stay under 140 is if I walk.  I meant to ask my midwife yesterday if going above was ok, but I was so excited to hear the heartbeat I forgot.  All she has said is that I can continue doing what I did before.

  • My doctor says that's old school.

  • Saw my doc yesterday and she said the exact same thing. Target HR should not exceed 140, which for me is walking.

  • Yea, my dr. said HR shouldn't exceed 140.  For me, that's just walking, too.  I feel like I don't get any sort of workout whatsoever!
  • That's what I was told.

However I had the opposite problem - way back in the good old days when I actually exercised, I had a really hard time getting my heart rate up high enough for "optimum calorie burning" or whatever.  This was on an eliptical machine and maybe the heartrate monitor was just broken or something.

Oh well, walking is good exercise :)

  • My OB said to keep it under 140 unless you were already used to getting it above that.  In other words, if you worked out before pregnancy, you can during as well, but if you were a couch potato, this isn't the time to take up running.
  • Everything I've read says that if you were working out before you got pregnant, you can continue that work out plan even if your heart rate goes above 140.
  • Everything I've read says not to get your heart rate over 140, but I asked my doctor about it and she said that I can continue to do what I was doing before, just to not try anything new. ?The only thing I really had to ease up on was the weights. ?Basically just listen to your body. ?I don't feel good if I work out the same as I used to so I stick to walking usually. ?I also got a few prenatal workout DVDs which I really like. ?I can get a decent workout in and know that all the moves I'm doing are safe.
  • The nurse practitioner told me under 160, but that I could continue what I was doing before.  I'm a distance runner and the only thing I have cut out is speed work (and trimmed my distance from a full marathon to half marathon schedule).  The book exercising through your pregnancy by Dr. Clancy has been recommended.  It's supposed to be good (although I haven't yet received the copy I ordered).
