  • I don't think this is real shocking at all - most people I know who have Etsy shops do it for fun and to make a little extra money.  None of them think they'll earn a real living that way.  Though I guess maybe this is more directed at the people who come over here asking about the high-paying WAH jobs that they can do without childcare.

  • It is sort of revealing in that etsy.com is actually making money off of people's fantasies than promoting hand-made products.  I'm sure this is more of a by-product, in that the founders actually wanted to create an online art-fair marketplace, but if so many people didn't think-- 'hey I can make hand knit coasters for a living!', etsy.com wouldn't be nearly as profitable.

    Ditto.

  • I find it funny that almost every time someone posts the "how do I make money WAH" or "extra cash" on the Nest, one of the responses suggests selling "something on ETSY".

So, the only people making money is the men who own the company? HA.

Of course, the psychological income for some women - the "I do have a job....I sell on Etsy", could be considerable.......

Exactly.  That is why I enjoyed this article so much.

Maybe some of you know women who KNOW that selling on Etsy is not going to earn them a huge income, I see a lot of the opposite happening - women saying that they want to be a WAHM, so they're planning to quit their job and start selling stuff on Etsy.  They seldom add that they actually have any talent for making homemade stuff though.

And "sell on Etsy!" is a very popular response on some of the other bump boards in respose to a "I want to WAH" thread.  My favorite - someone suggested to the OP that she buy a bunch of hairbands, some plastic barretts, and she could glue the barretts onto the hairbands and sell them on Etsy.  Yeah, totally talented - I see those selling like hotcakes, because most moms just don't have the time to glue a plastic barrett onto a hairband.

Exactly.  And I was sort of giving the founders the benefit of the doubt saying they wanted an online art-fair marketplace, but after awhile "The Etsy Top 50" and all the other stuff is just perpetuating the fantasy.
