A little late but, my exp with cervical cancer

I always have regular PAPs, didn't miss them. About 10 years ago, I had one "slightly abnormal". My Dr said it wasn't a big deal, nothing serious, come back in 6 months just in case. I did, and they were normal from that point on. I had an annual in August 2004 (screened normal), and got PG 4.5 months later with DS1. As part of my first appt, I received another PAP. This time, it came back as CIN III dysplasia, or also called Cancer Stage 0. How I went from normal to three levels of CIN dysplasia was never answered.

Anyway, my point is that it is possible for someone to have regular PAPs, completely on schedule, and things to get missed, obviously.

And FWIW, as a result, I had to have an extensive cone biopsy and full D&C. This resulted in an incompetent cervix and led to complications when I was PG with DS2. Those complications, compounded by the problem itself, led to a large part of the reason DH and I decided to not have any more children.

  • Sound like an awful experience.  Happy that you are healthy today!
  • That's my fear! I've had MANY abnormal PAP smears and the doctor always tells me to come back in 6 months, then when I go to get it repeated it's fine. I just had my annual gyn appt a few weeks ago and the doctor said not to worry about it since all my HPV tests come back negative. I'm pretty religious about making sure I get them done regularly, but I still worry a little every time.

Even my very first PAP smear as a teenager, before I was ever sexually active, was abnormal.

  • I'm sorry, that stinks! Your right, things get missed and sometimes Doctors don't get enough cells, or get the right area, and unfortunately paps are not diagnostic..they are just a screening test. I think a lot of times ascus is now sent for HPV testing so that the abnormal results can either be taken more seriously (like yours) and monitored better or thought to be nothing.

  • If you have a pap positive for HPV, you're supposed to have two years of negatives before you're "cleared". At least that was my experience. I had an abnormal after DS1 was born. I have to do one year of every 3 mos pap smears and then one year of 6 mos paps.. And if one would have come back abnormal I would have had to start over. Fortuntely they were all okay.

  • I could have written your post word for word except for the IC part which was a huge fear of mine after CB surgery but all turned out fine thankfully. My Dr. even started talking hysterectomy before I even had kids! So scary. I'm sorry you have to deal with this. It's not fair! I am religious about getting yearly paps but now worry that something could be missed even when things look fine.
