Not 3TC Related: Neighbor threatened to kill my dogs!

I have three labs that I absolutely adore. They are outside dogs and they are wonderful. They bark when someone walks near the yard and when there is an animal in the backyard, such as a rat, mouse, or an opposum. For a while there was a mice problem in the backyard so one of my dogs would bark a lot and eventually kill it. The other night there was another mouse in the backyard, so my dog was barking, must've been around nine at night, my neighbor, who by the way breeds dogs and trains them in a mean way (hitting them and starving them) told us to shut our dogs up or he'll kill them. I am so afraid he'll actually do it because he is such an a**hole, his dogs bark too, but that's what dogs do. He is the only neighbor to ever complain about our dogs. I think he just doesn't like us. Is there anything we can do to protect our babies, I don't want to wait until he actually poisons them or something to take some action. Any suggestions on what we could do? Thanks in advance.

Re: Not 3TC Related: Neighbor threatened to kill my dogs!

  • I'm out in the country so when someone says something like that my experience is they mean it.  I'd go down to the police dept and file a report stating what occurred and what happened.  Know the law.  It is perfectly legal for a dog to bark if it is in response to something like you wrote about.  It's instinct and acceptable.  However, if your dogs were barking incessantly (I'm not saying they are, I'm saying if) then you would be subject to a citation if HE reported it.  It's not likely that they'll do anything but you'd have it on record in case something (GOD FORBID) did happen.  Had it been a sensible neighbor I'd suggest you bake a cake and take it over with an apology for the noise and you'd try to keep it down (you don't have to mean it).  Some people may scoff at this next bit: bark collars are great and work well.  I've used them for just long enough for a dog to get the idea that barking isn't okay and then take it off when they realize it.  After that I only use it if they forget.

I can't stress enough that you shouldn't dismiss what he said.  I've had too many friends lose dogs, cats, chickens, ducks, ect to a crazed neighbor who didn't like the barking, crowing, quacking or what have you and poisoned them, let them out, or killed them in some way.  If he treats his own animals poorly, think how he wouldn't bat an eye to treat someone else's animal that was on his nerves.  Please be cautious.  Good luck.

  • My dogs don't bark unless they are reacting to something. We've asked other neighbors if they are a problem (in case they bark incessantly when we're not around) but NO ONE else has a problem with them. It is just this one neighbor. We considered bark collars for half a second, but one, they seem cruel, and two, we think it's ok for dogs to bark when someone enters the back yard, they warn us (& of course they'll bark if rodents are near their space, it's in their nature; unfortunately this only happens at night). I'm just afraid a police report will cause him to try and get revenge and REALLY hurt them.

  • Oh my gosh!!! Call the police! Even if all you can do is file a report, it will be on record. I would also keep a really close eye on your dogs. What kind of horrible person threatens to kill some poor. innocent dogs? I'm so sorry.

  • I would definitely call the police! Get that on record.

I hate evil people like that... it makes me sick to my stomach!

  • I would file a complaint with the police department too! We have an Australian Shepperd and a Black Lab and the Aussie is CRAZY. We really try to stay on top of the nuisance barking but we have a neighbor who has made some comments that has kept us on guard and I would have no problems going to the police and filing a complaint.

I would hate to see something happen and then the neighbor not be held responsible!
