braces as an adult

I went to the dentist this morning and confided that I'm not really happy with my teeth.  We talked about some options and she referred me to orthodontist for consult.  That will be in a couple of weeks, but I'm probabyl going to end up with some form of braces.  So at (almost) 30, I am probably going to have braces.  Oh, my!  There are basically three optins: metal, ceramic, or invisalign.  Anyone have any experiences as an adult?  I know I will be happy when it is done, but it could take as long as two years.  Whew.

    I had braces in my late 20s.  I had see through plastic brackets on top and metal on the bottom.  I couldn't get invisalign b/c I had an overbite that needed correcting.  I am really glad I did it, wish my dentist had sent me to an orthodontist as a kid.  My teeth look great and I have no regrets.  I even managed to get a new job and meet my (now) DH with braces, so they didn't hold me back at all.

    I haven't, but my little sister has them now.  She's 31.  She got them about 18 months ago, and she's almost done.  She's really glad she did and sayd it really hasn't been that big of a deal.  She has the invisalign.

    I had braces from age 23 - 27 with two jaw surgeries (not fun!).  I had the regular old metal kind.  My teeth were so horrible that it was well worthwhile.  For the most part it didn't bother me although I look so young that people tended to think I was in high school.

     When I started my master's program there were two other women in class with braces too (out of a class of 20).  I think it is becoming a lot more common now.

    I know I have no room to complain age wise bc I am 19 but I have had mine on for about 6 years. So just a warning pick your orthodontist carefully. My first one was an idiot and I am paying for it now. Having them on for this long has really messed up my teeth. I have to get some many fillings at the end of it. (2 months) bc I had them on for so long. Make sure they tell you their full plan. Bc my first doc didn't notice that I had one tooth that had never come down and after two years they saw it and it has taken this long to make room and pull it down into place. Just a warning.

    I have to get them pretty soon since I need to get an implant. I'm 30, and  little self conscious about the whole idea. I may end up only getting them on the bottoms...

    I had Invisalign. It took a year...Invisalign is usually quicker than regular braces (and more convenient IMO). It was the best investment of my life...I used to be so embarrassed of my smile (I had braces as a kid but my teeth crowded as an adult).

    The thing with Invisalign is you have to be disciplined enough to wear them all the time. It wasn't an issue for me - I didn't find them very uncomfortable except for the first day of each new set (you get new ones every 2 weeks).

    I did invisalign and was very happy with it.  Like pp said, you have to be disciplined about wearing them and for the full time, including retainer wearing afterwards but it was fast effective and other than the initial discomfort, pretty easy.

    I had invisalign.  My ortho was nice enough to submit it as regular braces so I had part of it covered by insurance  but it was still about $3000 out of pocket.  It worked great and no one knew that I wore it unless I told them. I would definitely recommend it if you don't mind spending the extra money.

    I had clear braces in my mid-20's.  I had had traditional braces in high school, but after having my wisdom teeth removed, my teeth shifted.  The orthodontist I went to gave me a discount because I paid all up front for the treatment.  I now have "permanent" bonded retainers on the back sides of my teeth so that I won't have to worry about wearing one.  I do wind up having to go in about once a year to have some glue fixed on the "permanent" retainers, but it's worth it to me!
    After 20 months TTC with PCOS, we were blessed with twins!
    They arrived at 36 weeks after PTL and bedrest for 14 weeks. Lilypie Third Birthday tickers image
