Can Metformin make you gain weight?

Is it possible?  I have been taking it for almost a month now and while I thought it might help me lose some lbs., I'm fatter than ever.

I take 1,500mg all at once with dinner.  And my eating habits haven't changed, except for the better (eating more protien, and fewer calories overall) and I'm excercising like a madwoman.

So I'm frustrated and confused. I had a pretty nasty reaction to Clomid back in March, but I don't think it was Ovarian Hyperstimulation, and even if it were, wouldn't it be out of my system by now?  I haven't taken Clomid since May!

Re: Can Metformin make you gain weight?

  • I'm no longer on Met (don't have IR but mild PCOS, raised androgens).  Anyway, I took met for over 2 years and I never lost any weight, just gained and gained.  I'm not saying that the met made me gain but it didn't do anything to help me lose.  My eating habits did not change, my stress levels were very high though.

Anyway, since failed IVF/mTESE in March I stopped the met and since June I have lost 20lbs. doing weight watchers.  When I met with new RE the other day he agreed to stay off the met since it was not helpful to me.

It's been a long journey. TTC since 9/06. multiple IUI's and IVF's and 4 m/c's. IVF#3 = BFP, twins, induced at 34w6d due to baby b passing away (no explanation). Delivered on 35w1d, Baby A - baby girl, and Baby B - baby boy, our little angel.

  • I dont know if Met will make you gain weight, but i have been on it for about a year (1500/day) and it certainly didnt help me lose (as i had hoped).  I have gained 10-15 pounds over the last year without any real changes to habits.  I feel your frustration.

  • This is so interesting...I've gained 10 lbs this past month as well. I've been taking 1500 mg a day for 2 months. I do cardio and weights and am a fanatically healthy eater. Never thought it could be the met, since it's supposed to help me metabolize sugar. Needless to say, it hasn't done anything for me, so I'm going to stop taking it!
