Part time nanny - Days off question

We have a nanny who comes to the house two days a week, and my mom watches our LO the other three. I see the post below for a full time nanny and how people handle vacation time, but what about part time. We dont have a contract with her, but we have a couple of days where we will be out of town and wont need her. Should I still pay her for these days? Or is part time considered you are paid for what you work? I'd like to hear what other people do

 Thanks!

Re: Part time nanny - Days off question

  • Our contract states that our nanny is paid by the hour, so we pay her for the days she works, no more.  I do try to give her a lot of notice for the days we don't need her so she can make other plans.

I would go back to your contract (and if you don't have one, I would suggest you make one) to see what your obligations are.

  • We have a nanny 3 days a week. No contract but we set forth the payment terms at the outset with her.  We do pay for both vacations we take and days that she takes off.  I get paid for vacation time, so I figure she should too.  She's such an important part of DS's life right now that I like to keep her as comfortable and happy as possible (and reasonable).

This is basically our approach. As said, I get paid vacation.  Why shouldn't she- especially when WE'RE the ones saying "we don't need you ___ days".

The one exception - we haven't dealt yet w/ her taking days off.  I think the set up she has w/ the family we share her w/ and what she did w/ a friend of mine is that if it's HER choice, she doesn't get paid (but I do think she's given 5 PTO days a year).

We've been in a temporary situation w/ her, so no contract.  But come Oct, it's going to be more official,, at which time we may sign a contract.

  • Its nice of you to pay, but other PT jobs don't pay vacation - that's a perk of full time work.

Also, I would highly encourage you to get something down on paper.  As an attorney, I have seen way too many situations go sour because people thought there was an understanding based on a conversation only to have it come back and blow up in their faces.

  • We talked about it in advance but agreed to the following - 6 days paid at her choosing (this is like 2 weeks since she watches DS 3 days a week) and any other time was not paid. I let her know in advance that we usually take 5 weeks of vacation each year.

But other PT jobs aren't responsible for the well-being of my child!  I'm not saying that to argue.  That's just my outlook on it.  My nanny has reasonable rates and she's watching the most important thing in the world to me.  I want her to be happy working for us!

  • IMO, PT would mean no paid vacation.  However, I think you also need to consider how much you like your nanny.  It might be money well spent if this means keeping her long-term.
