Clomid and multiples question

Found out last week I have low progesterone, OB said it was a 6.  Wants to start me on Clomid.  No flames please but doctor said 7-10% chance of twins, possibly less since I am not ovulating. well, we always felt we always had a higher chance of twins, since identical twins run in my moms side of the family in a few generations and DH is a twin as well, and they run in his family.  Question..now, if I release moe than one egg on Clomid, and 2 are fertilized, do I also run the risk of having them spit? giving me a higher chance of a multiple pregnancy?    Sounds dumb, but we ae really trying to weigh our options before trying again.  Thanks

Re: Clomid and multiples question

  • There is always a chance of having them split, twins on your H's side does not really play a role in what your eggs do though.

  • If you are predisposed to having twins then yes I think you would be at increased risk for the 2 eggs splitting and ending up with 4.

Your doctor should monitor you shortly before you O and they will be able to tell you how many follicles you have maturing that will likely release an egg.  If you have too many follicles you could cancel the cycle... but nobody wants to cancel a cycle. :(

  • You could be at an increased risk for twins with any IF treatment, however, identical twins are not genetic.  It is the splitting of one egg, not the fertilization of two eggs.  So, if you're going to have identical twins, using clomid or any other fertility treatment will not change that.

  • I think those numbers are only about 3% higher than the "average" risk of twins.  Not sure though - my memory is failing me.

ETA: that's for fraternal twins not identical

  • When I 1st starting taking clomid I was told it was 8-10% chance of having multiples. When I mentioned that twins run on both sides of our family I was told it was still a 8-10% chance. I wasn't really worried about it.

  • There is of course always a risk.  As pp said that will be hightened if you or your DH have a family history of twins.  I'm having a Clomid baby and there's just one in there.  My BFP dose was 150 mg days 5-9.
  • Identical twins aren't hereditary... on fraternal.  Identical is just luck.

  • You just need to be monitored to make sure you know how many eggs are being released.  Not using a trigger shot will also decrease your risk of twins.  There is always a possibility that an egg will split, but that is not increased with clomid and it is not hereditary.  GL!
