NBR: Help..fleas!

Ugh, I just discovered my cat has fleas.  She only had them once when we got her and we got rid of them and never saw them again until now.  She is an indoor cat but had escaped to the attached garage a couple times.  Also we just moved and the previous owners had a dog (my guess is there were fleas here before we moved!!)  I didn't notice any fleas until recently and we have lived here for 3 months though, so I really, really hope they aren't all over my house :(

What do you find effective to get rid of fleas?  Should I close of DD's room so the cat can't get in there?

Also, I was thinking of taking the cat to the vet for those drops but she isn't updated on shots, does anyone know if they will still do the drop?

  • you can do advantage or frontline, either one, without vaccinations. you can also just buy them at a pet store. you don't need to go to the vet. (sidenote: you should really get your animal vaccinated in case she gets lost or anything...) anyway, give her the meds, vacuum really well all over, and both those meds kill active fleas and eggs.

  • The only thing that worked for us was to bomb the house then have it professionally cleaned. Bag the mattresses and pillows and have the carpet and sofa shampooed.
  • You can take her to PetsMart or PetCo and get her dipped. Depending on how bad the infestation is you may want to use a flea bomb.
  • We found a few fleas on our cat awhile back and I didn't want to use any pesticide in the house so I used baking soda on the carpet and vacuumed a couple of times a day.  I heard the baking soda is suppose to suffocate them.  After a a couple of weeks of doing this and putting frontline on the cat we didn't see anymore.  Good luck to you.  It is a pain in the butt.

  • First, you can order the flea meds online. We get ours from Drs. Foster and Smith.

Second, you will need to vacuum every day. Empty the bag/container on the vacuum too. When our indoor cats had them, we emptied the vacuum into a grocery bag and sprayed flea stuff in it. You can buy spray for the carpets at a pet store. Also, when you vacuum, you need to move everything in order to vacuum underneath it. Don't forget about under the bed too.

We also washed our comforter and sheets every day b/c the cats go on our bed. Actually, the bed is where I first noticed the fleas.

I would try to keep the cat out of your DD's room, but it doesn't mean the fleas are not going to get in there.

GL! I've been there and I know how much it stinks to have fleas in your house!

This except we used diatomaceous earth (food grade) that you can rub directly onto their fur.  You can also sprinkle on carpet & leave in between vacuumung.  We didn't want to bomb, and it did take a couple weeks.  And wash all fabric things that they may get into.  Vacuum couches, chairs & beds too.  It's a major pain, but if you're up on it, you can rid yourself of them.
