Dumb Question re: Internal

Ok, ok, ok - I know this is a dumb question but I am too lazy to wait until my next Doctor's appointment to ask him.

What exactly does the doctor do when performing an internal exam?  If I choose to have one, I know I probably won't have it for at least a few weeks, but I have no clue what this exam entails.

Please no flames for the ignorance.

Re: Dumb Question re: Internal

  • My doctor had me lay back, throw my knees apart (not stirrups) and she stuck what felt like her whole hand (probably just two fingers) into my vag.  It lasted all of 10 seconds, but was kind of uncomfortable. DH held my hand, and dr talked about something else to get my mind off of it. Like I said, though, it was really fast.

  • Don't worry! I don't know how you would know unless you'd been through one! They really aren't a big deal if you relax. The dr. usually just inserts a couple fingers and feels your cervix. He or she will give an estimate on dilation and effacement based on what he or she feels. HTH!
  • When I had mine it was really simple. They didnt use any instruments, just felt around- may have pushed a little on my bump?. It just felt like pressure, it was not bad.
  • I actually had my first today because I had had a few contractions. It didn't hurt me at all, but felt like a lot of pressure and reminded me very much of how I felt during my yearly gyno exam.  But, nothing "extra" is used like in a yearly exam.

    HTH:)

  • It's similar to the feeling of a pap... at least with the quickness and uncomfortableness of it all.  Doesn't hurt a bit.  Basically, they are just checking for dilation and effacement I believe.

  • It's not bad.  The key is to relax.  If you tense up, it's way more uncomfortable.  :)  In my experience, the couple that I had in my early 30ish weeks weren't bad AT ALL but once I started actually dilating and effacing it was more uncomfortable than before.  Either way though, it's a lot of pressure, but not necessarily painful.

  • Mine haven't hurt at all, but I am not dilated. ?The doctor just pushes on your cervix with a couple fingers to see what your dilation and effacement is and if they can feel the baby's head.
