My RE's office called today to let me know that some of my bloodwork results came back high and they want to get me started on medication. Apparently my thyroid level was at a 5.02. They said they like to see it at or below 2.5 for women trying to get pregnant. I had blood drawn by my OB back in May, and my thyroid levels came back at 3.67 which they said was 'normal', but I guess is still high if you're having trouble trying to conceive??? I'm wondering how it can change so much over just a 3 month period. The *only* thing that's different now is that I started doing a step aerobics class a couple times a week in June, besides the fact that I've been on summer vacation.
I haven't done any google searching on this yet, I just got home and the call came in while I was out so I'll definitely start searching, but the med they want me on is Synthroid. Does anyone else take this? Anyone in a similar experience? Have you noticed any difference since being on this? I haven't looked up 'symptoms' of thyroid issues, but I haven't felt any different at all.
I go in for my HSG tomorrow so I'll pick up the script then and ask more questions obviously, but thought I'd start here first. Thank you for any insight!
Re: Anyone have thyroid problems?
Hi, I take synthroid. I have an underactive thyroid (Hashimotos). My RE likes to see my levels between 1 and 2 for TTC. Before I started taking Synthroid, I was at double digits! I take 88 mg of Synthroid and I haven't noticed any side effects. I've been taking it for a couple years now.
When you get pregnant, you will likely have to go back to the doctor so they can up your dosage some.
It really is manageable and if you follow the doc's directions, you shouldn't have any problems. And you might feel better too!
Good luck!
Your RE is correct, for people trying to concieve and pregnant they like to see it lower then the every day norm. It should be in the 2.5 range. It can go up for many reasons, diet etc. but 5.02 is still borderline high for people not trying to conceive.
I take synthroid, you will start of at a .25mg a day and most likely since your TSH is only slightly off will not need more adjustments, but they will retake your blood work in about 6 weeks just to be sure. You may need a higher dose to get the ranges back to normal so they would adjust then, rinse repeat.
As for symptoms. I had a hypothyroid for years and never noticed a difference. All standard symptoms did not corespond to me. Once I did start taking the meds though, it did feel different and I felt more energy. Keep in mind also, that at this point you are not all that high to feel symptoms.
After 7 years trying to concieve, 3 failed IUIs and 2 failed IVFs, my third IVF was a success!
My Christmas baby turned into a turkey bird! Dillon Richard was born at 34 weeks, 5 days on November 28, 2009 after 10 weeks on bedrest for preeclampsia.

I had my thyroid tested last Sept. and it was 4.25 - they said that was normal and didn't put me on meds. I got it tested again in April and it was 8.5, so they put me on 50mg or Synthroid. I went back 1 month later to get tested again and it was 21. They put me on 88 mg of Synthroid. I went back a month later and it was 33!!!!!!! They put me on 125 mg of Synthroid. After that, it tested at 1.8. That was two months ago and I have to go again to get it tested in a month.
TSH can change VERY fast, as evidenced by my experience. You want it under 4 or 5 at least in some old school opinions, or under 2 in some other opinions, while TTC and in early pregnancy.
Have you had your anti-thyroid antibodies checked? 80% of the time hypothyroidism is caused by Hashimotos, which an autoimmune thyroid disorder. There are some interesting studies connecting Hashimotos/Graves to elevated natural killer cells, etc. and fertility - but the jury is still out on that topic.
