Active labor and not know it?

Hey Ladies-

I'm posting here to see if any of you ladies went through this.  I had my 38 week appointment today and I'm 5 cm dilated and 80% effaced.  The doctor said that I could go into labor really soon.  With my son, my water broke and labor did not progress so I had to be induced.  I was only 4 cm with him at that point, so already I'm further along.  Is there any way that I could be in active labor and not know it?  I have some occasional abdominal tightness and discomfort, but nothing like what I felt when I had my pitocin induced contractions.  Everyone keeps freaking me out and asking why I'm not at the hospital right now, but I don't feel anything strong enough to have to call the doctor, plus I was there this morning.  I started to dilate pretty early, at 34 weeks and was put on bedrest for 2 weeks, so now I'm all frazzled. Anyone else go through this?

Re: Active labor and not know it?

  • Well....I didn't.....but, my Mom was in very active labour and didn't know it.  She went for an dr.'s appointment and the doctor said you are in labour, so get to the hospital ASAP.    She asked if she could go get grocies first.....

  • I was 5 cm at my appointment they sent me to walk for 1 hour then came back and put me in the hospital...broke my water and then started pitocin and he was born about 3-4 hours later.
  • Well I'm no doctor, but I though once you were at 5 cm you should be in the hospital...

    This.

I went to a Birth Center this time so I stayed at home as long as possible but I came down to get checked because I felt contractions but they were not intense and I wanted to be safe because it was an hour away... needless to say I was 8cm laughing and joking (they said I was a rare case though lol) I didn't feel jack until I had them break my water. I was just hanging out there and wasn't in "active" active labor yet so we helped it along a little.

  • That was me last week.  I don't know how active my labor was, but I had been been having period like cramps for about a week beforehand - this is my first.  Went in for my 38 wk appt and was told I was 5cm, 80% and my water bag was bulging and frayed.  We went home, packed, and went back to the hospital so my water could be broken.  I felt nothing more than intense period like cramps until I was about 8cm.  I delivered with naturally with no pit about 8.5 hours after my water was broken.

  • I have a call into my doctor's office because I mean, I was there this morning.  Okay, on the phone with them now, and she said I need to really concentrate more on when the contractions are happening, because if they are not really strong enough to grab my attenton but i am having them, they could be consistent enough to count as active labor.  She said they could be silent contractions as well.  This is so crazy.  I mean, with my son, my water broke, so I knew, but with this one, its still intact and I feel no leaking.  I feel like i'm walking on eggshells.
  • In retrospect, I think I was in the early stages of labor for probably 18-20 hours or so before I realized it...looking back, I do remember noticing more (what I thought) were BH contrxns. They were mildly uncomfortable, but nothing spectacular. In fact, I had been at my doctor's office that morning and the nurses had a good laugh b/c the contractions were 'so small' (I was all amped up b/c they were actually showing on the tracing...I was 8 days overdue and FINALLY had proof that at least something was happening! The nurses thought that was hysterical.) Contractions were timeable w/i 12 hours of noticing what I thought were BH and woke me up from a dead sleep...delivered our LO about 7 h. after contractions were 2-3 min. apart and lasting a minute each.?

because you are!  I was 8cm and calmly walking into the Dr and hospital.  Got a laugh out of the mom that wanted to get groceries...  FUNNY.

  • In general, no matter how far dilated you are, if you do not eventually have regular, painful contractions you are not actually in labor.  I had contractions for weeks on and off before LO was born. That was false labor, even though it caused cervical change. I was dilate to 4.5 cm 100% effaced at 38w0d.  3 days later I had more period cramp type contractions that tapered off. 2 days after that I woke up to painful contractions and had DD within 4 hours. Are you close to the hospital? You will know when labor hits you, but it might be very short!
  • I had my 37 week appointment and was a generous 4 cm, I was having minor contractions and cramping but nothing serious.  We decided to walk the mall for a couple hours and get lunch in case I was truely in labor before we drove all the way home.

We went to the hospital just in case and ended up being fully effaced and 6 cm.  DS was born less than 10 hours later.

  • ack, haha, sounds like many ladies in the same position.  I wish I could just have someone check me to see where I am right now, haha.  I want to stay home as long as possible.  I have been keeping track for over an hour and right around 10-15 min apart, and i think i had one that was like a 20 min space.  I am pretty much recording anything I think is a contraction.  I guess the worst thing is I have the doctor paged, he says, go in, and I am not progressed at all right?  and then they send me home?  We have my sister sleeping over tonight incase something happens so she can be here with our son.  Craziness!
