as if labor wasn't scary enough...

Re: as if labor wasn't scary enough...

  • I refuse to read horror stories about BFing.

  • That is only true for some women (and yes, it was true for me). The LC told me that fair skinned women tend to be more susceptible to pain. Also, your uterus contracts when you start breastfeeding and while it helps your uterus shrink it can be painful.

Better to go in prepared and knowing this than being completely shocked and caught off guard, like I was.

  • I wasn't prepared for how bad that hurts. I cried every time would get hungry b/c it hurt so bad. (He had latch problems also so that made the problem even worse). It does get better but it takes a little while.

  • Don't worry! I have to admit that I had a rough time bfing with my dd at first, and I can relate to that other poster. I had cracking and bleeding because I didn't realize her latch wasn't good soon enough. Once I fixed her latch, the pain almost completely disappeared, and once my nipples had time to heal, it couldn't have gone more smoothly.

    But here are my tips:

-make sure you surround yourself with a good support system. If you have friends or family members who have successfully bf, then don't hesitate to lean on them! (however, make sure that the info that they are giving you is up to date. My mom tried to tell me that I should air my nipples out, but now the general consensus is that wet healing with creams etc is better.)

-educate yourself on the basics of a good latch and get a good book with pictures!

-presevere because it is so worth it! I ended up bfing my dd until 14 months!

I didn't know that! I am fair skinned so maybe that's why is so bad for me?

  • oh and ps: the lactation consultants that I saw in the hospital were worthless, and they told me that dd's latch was really good. But it really only appeared that way. So truly, getting a book with good pictures was my lifesaver!

I know! Isn't that weird?! It does get better but in the beginning there is some pain. I feel more prepared this time for it. Last time I freaked out so badly I gave my baby a bottle (no lactation consultants on the weekend) thinking she wasn't latched correctly (she was).

  • Granted I have never bf before since this is my first kid, but going to a bf class has really helped me.  It was more about gaining confidence that I could do it, knowing what resources are available to me and having DH go with me so he is on the same page.  No class can prepare you for pain, but at least I am more educated and mentally prepared for bfing.

Well, the one I got was the  La Leche League book, but you might browse around in that section of the book store. The LLL book has really good pictures and the first half is awesome, but I didn't pay much attention to the second half since it is more about parenting and tandem nursing etc. HTH!
