Anyone a WAHM with a nanny or mother's helper?

Currently I am a WOHM in the publishing industry. We have one child who just began Kindergarten and we are TTC soon. One option we've been considering exploring is my working from home and having a nanny or mother's helper in our home caring for the child while I'm still there (working in an office). As opposed to putting our infant in a child care center.

I'm just curious if anyone here works in such a setup, and if it works, and what the pros/cons might be...

 TIA!

  • I do it and love it. It is great in terms of getting to nurse duing the day, etc. The only downside is now DS is old enough to know I'm going into my home office and so I'm stuck in the office so as to not distrupt his day.

  • I did, when DD was about 4-12 months of age. It was nice to be able to know exactly what was going on with the nanny, and I loved being able to pop downstairs to see DD throughout the day. Plus, no packing up DD just to return home a few minutes later!

Cons? Same as carrie said, as they get older and more aware, it's tough to avoid disrupting their day when you just want to pop out of the office for a drink of water or something.

Mommy to DD1 (June 2007), DS (January 2010), DD2 (July 2012), and The Next One (EDD 3/31/2015)

  • Also, always have a Plan B because i think they think since you work from home it is better to call in sick or whatnot. Another advantage is that you don't have a sick baby all the time and if LO is sick, the nanny/mother's helper comes anyway to care for the child.

    Ditto

  • I did this the first year and it was fabulous.  The only con was the lack of socialization which was the main reason we switched to daycare at 1 year.  But in the infant months it was great to have her at home where I saw her all day.  She wasn't old enough yet to want to play with me or need the socialization that's more important as they mature.  If we have another I'd love to do the same thing.

  • Also, I never took time off for a sick nanny (she just never got sick!) but we took plenty of time off once DD was in daycare and got every single bug that went through the place.  It's gotta happen at some point though.
