Question for formula feeders

Do you mix up bottles and put them in the fridge and warm them up later or do you just use the right temp of tap water and mix it fresh every time?  At first I was just using tap water and he took it fine and now im pre mixing bottles and warming them but that just seems like it takes to long.  Is one better than the other?

Re: Question for formula feeders

  • My DS only will take his bottle at room temp.   We use filtered water and mix the bottle when it is time for him to eat.  We did try to warm bottle for him, but that seems to take longer IMO.

  • I guess do what works best for you. I wanted it to be easy for our family no matter where we were so since day one I have used filtered room temp water so i avoid heating it.

I make bottles as he wants/needs one. Formula should only be kept unused for 24 hours. So to avoid making to much a head I just make them as he wants them. ?

  • My son preferred his formula cold, so we'd just mix a day's worth (with Brita filtered tap water) and keep it in the fridge. We tried a big pitcher as well as individual bottles; do what works for you. I liked having them ready to go in case I had to leave DS with someone while I ran errands.

  • Have you opened the bottle after it's been mixed and took a smell? I opened one of DD's bottles that was already mixed in the fridge, took the nipple/cap off and got a whiff and it smelled horrible. I decided at that point that I would not make formula in advance. I make fresh bottles every time now.

  • I do both. If I am home for a long period of time I premake a batch stick it in the fridge and then poor that into smaller bottles as needed. DD takes cold bottles straight from the fridge so I don't warm them. If I'm only going to be home for a short stretch I will make bottles on demand from the tap. I prefer to use the batch out of the fridge, it is much faster!

  • I fill a 20 oz water bottle with filtered water and leave it on the counter. This way we just mix as we go. When we go out, I pour the water in the bottle and just add the formula when he's ready for it.
  • I keep a brita on the counter and pre-fill his bottles with water and have them lined up on the counter ready to go.  We didn't want the hassle of having to heat them (esp. in the middle of the night) so we found just mixing them as needed worked for us and since he has never had a warm bottle, he doesn't seem to mind room temp.

  • We've done room temp from day one. I take the bottle out of the fridge and either set it out on the counter for a little while or I just run it under hot water until it feels room temperish.

  • I either make it fresh using our Brita, or right out of the fridge without warming it up. With DD#1 I learned I might nto be able to warm up a bottle when she wants it, so from day one I never warmed them. She is used to a cold bottle.
  • I make them as a I go with warm tap water. its so much easier than messing with warming a bottle and then I don't have to worry about it going bad.

  • I premeasure everything so that it's ready to go.  When I wake in the morning I fill 3 bottles with water & then measure out formula for 3 bottles in the formula dispenser.  When its time to feed I pour the powder in, shake, & serve.  Takes less than a minute.  When he gets a little older we will probably have him start taking bottles cold, we did this with dd & it was great b/c it got her ready to drink cows milk.

  • I fill all the bottles with water ahead of time and leave them on the counter. When it's time to eat I put the powder in, shake it up and feed! The only time we warm bottles is if she doesn't finish it and I put it in the fridge to save.

  • we measure out the powder ahead of time in the bottles, and then keep a pitcher of water upstairs for feedings during the night. During the day I just use tap water from the faucet at room temp.

  • We use the Dr. Brown's pitcher and we mix the formula each night before bed and pre-fill the bottles for the next morning and grandma's house.  We also use the bottle warmer (not a big deal for us, takes no time at all), I just warm it a few minutes before she gets hungry since she is pretty much hungry about every 3 hours (give or take 15 mins).

DD has severe gas issues so pre-mizing ensured that the powder was well dissolved in advance, when we would fill bottles with water, then add powder, and then feed right after, we had major issues.

Do what works for you :)
