Trying to Get Pregnant

What's the strangest thing you've ever eaten?

I'm really hungry today, so that got me thinking about foods. The strangest thing I've ever eaten would have to be a worm. (I know, I know, it's not usually considered a food around here!) I worked at a summer camp one summer and the camp director dared the staff to eat a worm. So one other counselor and I went outside, dug up some worms, and ate them!

  • Escargot, squid, and everyone thinks that my love for fried chicken livers is weird.

EDIT: I forgot pig's feet. I was made to eat one as my initiation into my high school sorority...

  • Honestly, I can't think of anything.  I'm a pretty picky eater.
  • Let's see, on my adventures in Africa I have eaten: Lamb's brain (tastes like bland fish), Goat liver, and lungs (story and pic in blog, in siggy), mopani worms friend in garlic butter (super chewy, tastes like grass), ostrich egg Ick!, machicha (basically fried weeds), palm fruit (rotten saw dust, really really nasty stuff), oxtail (deish), but the worst is the African beverage of choice, it goes by many names: Lashorro, maswi, etc. It is basically rotten milk which they shake up all day. It is so rotten it is almost fizzy, you can smell it when they bring it into the room, this one ladies is truly awful.

I have also eaten any african animal you can think of.  Giraffe is greasy, elephant is chewy, zebra is nasty, crocodile is like chicken, rhino is like eating leather, but warthog is delicious!!!

  • I've also eaten escargot... I couldn't get the image of snails out of my mind when I was chewing. Bleh.

And I had a lot of interesting game meat when I was in South Africa... like kudu, impala, ostrich (delish!). But I'd say those are more exotic than strange :)

EDIT: Also, biltong is great (like fresh beef jerky, but not necessarily cow meat). Warthog biltong has a very earthy taste, but it's good! Regular NA jerky has been ruined for me. It's so sweet in comparison to biltong.

  • I LOVE escargot!

I have to confess that I will try anything once, so I have tried, sea urchin, beef tounge, almost any of the insides of a cow (there is a soup my family will make and the broth is really good, but it comes with all this "extra stuff"), I think I even tried the brain once. There is probably a long list, but I just can't remember since I'll eat anything!

  • For me it was probably Squid Jerkey (Like Beef Jerky) or Octopus. BUT DH has eaten dog before...yes you read that correctly. We lived in Korea for a year and over there it is considered a 'treat' and they believe it to increase male stamina ;) I was not impressed that he ate it but he said "when in Rome..."

  • I have escargot, I have had tripas (tripe), lingua (tongue), most fish raw, nopales (cactus, yummy). My great aunt does this awesome dish nopales and these fried egg whites with dried shrimp powder in a yummy red sauce  ::drools::.  I have eaten many different items and I am open to nearly anything once.
  • Oh my gosh Iived with south american chef and it was like a episode of fear factor at our house:

    Tripe

    Calves Brains

    Aligator

    Tounge

    Sweet Breads

    Veal Cheek

Secaidas (sp? the bugs that only come out of the ground ever 17 years)

    Pigs feet

    Bear

    Squirl

    Blood Pudding

    Black Pudding

    Haggis

  • Fried locuts sprinkled with chili powder in Niger.  It was 2004 when they were having a famine because the locusts ate most of the crops.  There wasn't much else to eat.  I'm normally a vegetarian too.

if cleaned properly they don't smell like poo. But it still smells weird. I can't eat them now.

I guess the craziest is chicken feet and squid.

  • I've had stomach, intestine, cabeza & something that my SIL puts on a sandwich that I swear is grass from her back yard that I could barely stand to eat.

  • It might be a cultural thing for me, but I've tried pretty much everything that a lot of people might think is gross (and I like a lot of it, lol).  Pig brain, cow tongue, tripas, sea urchin, escargot, chitlins, rooster fries, squid, octopus, pig feet, chicken hearts, etc.

I eat pretty much everything.  Stick out tongue
