Pregnant after 35

I need a pep talk!

I just went shopping for the first time for maternity clothes and am very depressed!  First of all, I am not "showing" yet but pants are definitely all too tight and I've already gone up a size in regular clothes.

So anyway....none of the maternity clothes fit me right and I just feel like a big fat blob!

I was already about 10-15 lbs over where I should be before I got pg and now with the 8-9 lbs I've gained so far I am just disgusted with myself!   I don't want to feel this way for the next 7 months!  Crying

  • :(  I'm sorry you're feeling bad about yourself...but I had that phase too right about where you are.  Definitely find some clothes you feel good about, no matter what phase you're in.  If you buy a few larger non mat pieces now to wear for 6-8 weeks, you'll feel better, and have them for PP when you're getting back to your old body.  Hang in there!

  • Honestly, I hate most maternity styles.  Most aren't very flattering at all, no matter what size you were to start.

I've found better luck just hitting the Woman's section of places like Kohls and JCPenneys.   Lots of that stuff is made with regular elastic waistbands that can stretch with you as your tummy grows.   And it doesn't really "look" like maternity wear.  And shirt styles right now are still very belly-friendly.

And don't get me started about underwear!

  • I *totally* felt that way, too! And I know, it stinks and makes you feel bad. I found that a few empire waist sundresses and wrap dresses (both from before I was pg) really helped--they sort of camouflaged my growing butt/belly and were comfortable and looked cute.

It has been difficult for me to adjust to my changing body, too--it's hard!! I don't have any great advice, but know you're not alone, and I promise that when you do start showing it'll feel a little easier. Hugs to you!!!

  • I hear you- I gained 16 lbs in the first tri! Hopefully it will level off for you like it did for me.
  • Hang in there, tomorrow is a new day!  I'm having a fight with maternity clothes as well, the only store that I have around that I can try clothes on in is Motherhood Maternity. I bought some maternity pants and they fit decently in the store but after wearing them for an hour or so they fall right off me.  Its so annoying having to pull your crotch up from your knees every time you get up. Looks like it will be a elastic band skirt kind of season.

  • Most women go thru the awkward in between stage.  Your regular clothes are unbearable, and maternity clothes feel stupid bc your not really showing.  Have you tried the belly band?  Perhaps that will help.

  • I am where you are! I'm uncomfortable in my regular clothes, look lumpy  most of the time, but don't look pregnant enought for maternity and it isn't sitting right yet.

I remember this from before, and it lasts about 2-3 months for me. yikes!

2 days ago I pulled out the belly band I had bought and wore it under a summer dress. It actually helped - smoothed me out and made me feel better. For now, I'm dressing carefully from my pre-maternity collection, and I'm counting the days until I can get my body back and start doing what I want and need to do. I figure that I'll have toswitch over to maternity or new big stuff when the cold weather comes, but until then, I'd rather save the money and just look lumpy..

  • Oh, and there is a point when you WILL start looking better in maternity. I distinctly remember the day last pregnancy when I tried on a maternity top that I had bought before, and it actually made me look better than non maternity... At some magic point, it switches and you'll start looking cute/good and pregnant instead of just awful.

  •  I remember that feeling ALL too well....I too was a little heavier than I wanted to be when it all began and my clothes got snug very quickly.  It all changes, and you'll be looking cute and adorably pregnant in just a couple months tops!!  Hang in there....I'm now complaining that some of my shirts are too small....lol....who thought that'd happen??
  • It will get better!  I hated the way I looked in everything until about 16-18 weeks.  I found that most maternity clothes are extremely unflattering.  I bought a lot of cute empire waist dresses and tops at Macy's, and they have worked throughout my pregnancy.  Old Navy yoga pants & roll top skirts have also been a huge piece of my daily wardrobe. The only splurge I made was on a great pair of maternity jeans from Pea in the Pod.  They were pretty pricey, but I love them and definitely got a lot of wear out of them!

Here's my little piece of advice, for what it's worth:  try and work out when you can.  Even if it's just a walk through your neighborhood or doing some yoga in your house with a DVD, getting some exercise will help.  I swim twice a week and do 30 min of cardio twice a week and so far, I have had very little discomfort and haven't gained nearly as much weight as I had feared I would.

    Good luck to you!!

  • Thanks everyone...I knew what I was feeling was nothing unique...my poor DH didn't know what to tell me - his only suggestion was to ask my "bump" friends for advice!  Smile

Shelby - I did get up and go walking this mornng plus did some light upper body weights and do feel better!

Part of my problem too is that up until my wedding in May I had been working out regularly, and working with a personal trainer.  But since then, DH and I have been really lax about our eating habits and working out...so its just sort of snowballed.  I am definitely going to start walking again...I know it helps - physically but even more so mentally!

    Thanks Ladies!

  • Awww!

It'll get better!  The first trimester I remember feeling so bloated, and nothing fit right.  Once the bloat went down, maternity stuff started to actually work for me.  Maternity tops with side ruching are AMAZING, I highly recommend picking some up!
