Infertility

Went to Auschwitz today

Today we visited Auschwitz-Birkenau just outside of Krakow, Poland. DH and I knew quite a bit about it and what to expect, but seeing it all in person is a totally different experience.

Talk about putting things in perspective - IF seems a whole lot less significant right now.

Re: Went to Auschwitz today

  • I went to Mathhausen a few years ago, and yeah, it does put things into perspective.  It was so sad seeing people grieve loved ones and light candles in the very room they died.  Seeing it all in person was pretty intense.

Hope you are having a great trip!

After 2 rounds of IVF & 2 rounds of FET, we were blessed with identical twin girls!

  • Yeah, it was totally intense. There were a ton of people there so it was a bit surreal but after leaving it all sort of started to sink in more.

Kim - other than today, the trip has been great so far - and another week to go!

  • It's amazing how traveling intensifies our sense of humanity and empathy.
  • So glad it has been a great trip.  Are you staying in Poland the whole time or traveling around?

  • Wow; tense.  I used to have a patient who was a Holocaust survivor; she had the # tattoo on her inner arm.  She was amazing.

  • I was there in 2000 and there was an Israeli youth group touring.  That made it even more intense than normal to see these kids draped in a flag with the star of David.

Are you going to the salt mine near Krakow?  I highly recommend that.  They have an entire chapel carved out of salt. Amazing.

  • It must have been an intense experience.

Enjoy the rest of your time in Europe.

  • I really want to go but I'm so nervous because my grandfather was a prisoner there.  He suffered with the memories for years, I can't even imagine what he went through.

  • One of the most intense experiences of my life ws a trip to the Tereisenstadt concentration camp in the Czech Republic last summer.  It is a reality check on so many levels.

We didn't visit Krakow but were in Veinna and Prague last summer as part of a trip mostly spent on bicycle in the Czech Republic.  Enjoy your travels and not to be a downer, but be very, very mindful in Prague because my usually very street savvy DH (who grew up in NYC) had his camera stolen on our last day there.

That is amazing about your grandfather. You should definitely try to go in his honor. I went last year to Juno Beach (Normandy, France) where my grandfather landed on D-day and it was really incredible to stand on the beach where his tank landed. Mind you, of course this was a completely different experience vs. your grandfather's, and I would never even try to compare the two, but FWIW it did bring me closer to him and what he went through.

Funny you say that - a cab driver in Vienna told us that the exact same thing happened to his wife last week! - thanks for the tip!

  • i've been there twice...   it is intense.    and yes, it helps put all of our struggles into perspective, and helps us to realize how truly blessed and lucky we are.

  • Oh wow.  I've been studying the Holocaust lately.  That would be so intense.  I hope to get there some day.
  • Hi!  I just wanted to butt in and say that I hope you enjoy the rest of your vacation.  I have read quite a few books on the Holocaust and my Dad grew up in the Netherlands during WW2 so I heard tonnes of stories when I was growing up.  It must have been an amazing experience to be there.  Take care.

  • We went to Dachau just outside of Munich a couple of years ago and it was an experience I'll never forget.

Enjoy the rest of your trip!

  • I can't imagine, it would definitely put things in perspective.  I took a holocaust class in college and it was disturbing, sad, and enlightening.
